1/2" BSF Threaded Sender or Adaptor

Yeah I think i've finally concluded that it's a 5/8" UNF thread. Which makes things easy thankgod!!.

Now just gotta do the oil pressure, I hope that is 1/8" !?!?!?

Roger can you confirm that? I want to put a tee in so I can run a pressure switch for my dash light.

p.s Does anyone know, if you have a mechanical oil pressure gauge, do you have to bleed the pipe in order for it to work?
 
Yep VDO and most others I have come across are 1/8" VDO say 27 tpi NPTF but will go into BSP fittings at a push.

I have a mechanical oil pressure gauge and it works OK with air gaps in the plastic pipe so, no it does not need bleeding.

Oh dear, have another look old son, all the sensor fittings are BSP. BSP was used because it is a tapered thread for sealing.

The thread pitch is the same, just the angle of the thread slightly different.

Its only the senders that are pipe thread and most likely NPT not BSP but anyway very little difference 60 degrees or 55 degrees. All other threads are UNF and not BSF at Bilgediver indicated.

I do think threads in the block are UNC if you wish to be absolute correct.

Most of my family worked at longbridge before it closed up brother in the tool room.

Calm down dear boy! Thats what I said, BSP for the "senders"! The other post that I provided a link showed Unified for the rest!!
I rebuilt enough of them in my yoof!

In the midst of this fascinating journey into esoteric thread forms, Cliveshep's post seems to have received short shrift. Or perhaps no shrift at all. Anyone with a BMC engine would do well to know the web address he mentioned, http://www.thornycroftengines.co.uk/

They hold a huge stock of BMC parts and, I believe, also hold the rights to the Thornycroft diesels. I've found them most helpful in the past.

Ok well once you lot have stopped arguing, I was at at the boat today and gave the engineer there my sender as he said he would find out what size it is.

He says it's a 3/8" BSP. Go figure.
 
I was right!!! Yazoo, I piss ed the highest, Yabba Dabba Doo!!
Actually, if I remember correctly the BSP size is the ID, so 3/8" plus 1/8th each for the wall thickness, gives you your 5/8"

Ok well....lol....

Went back to the mechanic guy who told me it was 5/8 BSF. I told him i'd found out it was 3/8 BSP. He shook his head saying it wasn't, no way.

He promply took out a 3/8 BSP fitting, screwed the sender in and it wobbled about like a good'un. Took out a 3/8 BSP sender and it was nice and snug.

He said although the thread is the same pitch, 3/8 BSP has a slightly wider diameter thread. So I still dont know what it is ffs.
 
Just checked, 3/8 BSP thread diameter is 16.662mm

Mine is only 15.6mm, so thats why it wobbles.

Now what has occured to me is that the sender I have fitted is not in the OEM location. It is directly in the side of the thermostat housing. Now on the engine block where the OEM sender would be fitted, there is just a bolt plugging the hole. I've taken this out and there is water coming out, so it's definatly the sender hole. Now this hole 'could' be 3/8 BSP. I'll take it out tomorrow and measure the bolt.

Not kepted up with this as been on the boat all last week but the chart on wikipedia shows UNC as 5/8 inch 11 tpi, UNF is 18 tpi which is what I said on my first post.

Back in office for 5 weeks before I can get to the boat again. ho hum.
 
Beg your pardon, quite right, UNF not UNC.

I've got a new sender so i'll try it tonight on the boat, although it doesn't work with my new temp gauge.

The old sender works... although having hooked it up to the original gauge it only just registers and certainly doesnt show the correct temperature :(
 
Going through the same thing on my boat only my boat is 600 km away.

Just check if sender is for duel gauges and not single gauge as resistance range is different which would give an incorrect reading.

The VDO duel sender has a 'D' stamped on the inlet of the pressure sender and would think the same goes for the temp sender.

All my stuff is Smiths, same as would have been fitted to the MGA/MGB etc..

I think i've bought the incorrect 'new' gauge. So i'll stick this one on fleabay and get a new gauge/sender set from Holden. At least their sold as a set and I know they'll work! Also their sender states it's 5/8 UNF so that must be right.
