Help,
I need to put some more threads on my prop tube, it has unfortunatly been concreted in so i cant remove it.
My only other option is to get hold of an inch and 1/8th bsp die nut however i am finding this very hard.
Does anyone have or know anyone i could borrow one from.

kind regards

Stephen

Try these guys - bit of an old fashioned place so they may have what you want.

Aplogies if they don't.

Tracy Tools Ltd, Devon www.tracytools.com offer 1-1/8" BSP "dies" at £14 plus vat. I know they sell "die nuts" but not sure about that size. I've dealt with them for years and they give a very fast mail order service on all kinds of taps, dies, drills etc. [Usual disclaimer!]

Die nuts are really for cleaning up existing threads. An adjustable die is the correct tool to cut new threads, but in such a large size the special pipe threading tool with inserted dies is the best option. See if your local hire shop has one.

Apologies for recommending Tracy Tools to you, they have now gone down in my estimation - what's the use of having something listed in their catalogue that they can't supply!? Wasting everybody's time!

However, we are not beaten yet! Try Leeside Toolshop, Yapton, West Sussex. www.leesidetools.co.uk. They have a huge stock of secondhand tools.
Or G & M Tools, Ashington, West Sussex www.gandmtools.com.

I haven't come across inch and an eigth BSP and my reference books don't list it.

How are you measuring your tube and deciding that its that size? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

to obtain that size we measured the internal diameter of the tube and counted the treads, also gauged the threads then looked up in two books, one didnt list it, the other larger more comprehensive one did.
This is on a stuart tube and cutlass.

Just about to say the same.

There are no threads based on 1.125" outside diameter.

BSPF can be 1" or 1 5/16" o/d but even then you need to know the pitch as it can be 1/8" x28 or 1/4" x 19.

Suggest you try www.cromwell.co.uk

I have always found cromwell tools v helpful

Agree, thread files are invaluable, we keep both imp & metric on the job, especially usefull for dressing bruised/x'threaded fittings.

A set of screw pitch guages are also very cheap and worth having .

have another measure up mate

have you got a zeus data book which has all pipe threads sizes and so on
If you cant get a die but can get hold of a tap make your own thread cleaning tool, it's a simple enough task to cut a thread harden it and should get you out of trouble.
Thread files are all well and good but one handed a real pain to use.
cheers
Mick

Zeus tables doe not list this thread but the "Engineers Handbook" does 11 tpi I no that, because I was present when measured and must be a discontinued thread, probably dropped when we entered the EC racket, most of the stern tubes of around the 1970s used this size. Probably an odd size then and hard to get fittings except from the "Approved" sites, thus keeping the market.

Re: have another measure up mate

Thanks for help so far, my reason for doing this is that the threads on the first 1/2 inch of he tube are damaged due to the cutlass holder de-zincing, i have a replacement cutlass holder now from fairways marine which has also been verified that the thread is 1" 1/8th. but need to cut a couple more threads further up the tube where there was some wooden packing was initially, this has been removed to gain a further inch of good tube.
