Ummm, cheap at half the price. Both of my Pedros (TMD31 engine(s)) were supplied without the Volvo mechanical boxes and with Borg Warners instead as Pedro refused to take them after a series of misadventures with dispsticks blowing out and cone failures.

I actually had the original Borg Warner break a rear cone on my first Pedro but the second came with the higher rated 'pancake' style Borg Warner boxes (forget model number) and they were rated to 200hp on a 100hp motor, which gave a nice feeling. Wonder if there are relatively easy non-Volvo swap-outs instead of the HS1s that are strong and perhaps less expensive? There must be quite a market for them, given all the 31 and 41 series shaft drives out there.

Yes. There are some good points about stern drives. Thing is, I've never heard of anyone who's had both, preffering outdrives. With shafts, the boat feels right, It does just what it says on the can. You can drive through slosh, slowly if need be. and they park on a sixpence.

Wish I'd known about that at the time. Mine are V*?v* lumps. They cant even decide how long to make the dip sticks or whether its ATF or engine oil in them. Gives little confidence for the rest!!

In defence of Birchwoods, I have owned a TS31 with aft cabin that perfromed well at sea and was quite roomy. And now have a TS37 supersport, the build quality is good and its sea keeping in rough conditions is better than most that size and money. As for the size and space we have ample room for entertaining etc etc.

Even more sterndrives

You'll see even more soon thanks to forthcoming emissions regs because sterndrives can be installed as packages (ie no variable components and engine builder responsible) whereas shaftdrives come as components that need other bits and have different characteristics (ie boatbuilders responsible).

Not to bothered about the oil. Both seem to be Ok. More concerned about the two different lengths of dip sticks. One comes up on the Volvo computer thingy, the other does not. But both suplied by Volvo??
