Are you saying that it can be reliably repaired?

    Repair of folding propeller

I have a bronze folding propeller, similar to Gori, with damaged teeth of the gear that synchronises the opening of the blades. Is it possible to rebuild the teeth by, say, brazing? They shouldn't normally be loaded, but the prop was fouled by a rice sack that stripped some of the teeth. Now...

Boat on the hard-third party liability

A hurricane may be an act of God, but it's effects in a known hurricane area are predictable. Therefore if a yacht falls over you would have a case against those responsible for supporting that yacht as the damage caused by the fall is not an act of God but of human failing. Those responsible...

    Lewmar Hatches.. Seal Kits

I renewed the acrylic glass at the same time. The seal is really awkward to position properly, especially around the corners. After 21 hatches I thought I had it mastered ....... until the 22nd that is! The old sealant can be removed by using flat screwdrivers like chisels (they...

    Max Prop is AWOL

Just an update: there is another catamaran in the yard that has just pulled out missing an 18" 3-blade volvo feathering prop. off their SD 20!! Seems like a money spinner .... I must get an underwater camera and metal detector ....

    Max Prop is AWOL

I don't understand how a tabbed washer would work as there is no keyway or flat on the shaft to keep it from rotating with the nut. The nut also has a rounded front portion that would tend to prevent the tab on the washer working .....

    Max Prop is AWOL

Update: The Maxprop is held onto the SD20 sail drive with a conventionally threaded nut with a conventionally threaded bolt through the centre of it and the shaft. This is rather unusual as I would have thought the threads should oppose each other to form a proper lock. However ..... I can...

    lofrans windless Gypsy.

It doesn't hurt to put a little heavy waterproof grease on the cone clutch. It certainly improves the predictability of the operation. It is preferable that the clutch slips before the shaft breaks or the deck is damaged!

    Max Prop is AWOL

I'll have to look at the other Maxprop when I take it off, but I think the hub I'd fitted on with a nut and a bolt is passed through the shaft and torqued up to lock both the nut and the bolt. This would make sense with the thread in the centre of the shaft. I am aware that some sd20's had the...

    Max Prop is AWOL

I bought my Catana with 2 Maxprops fitted in 2008. I've never needed to remove the hubs. Anyway ..... I had just cleaned them a day before one disappeared leaving the Yanmar SD 20 shaft clean. The fixing bolt has completely gone with the rest of it. All the Maxprop dealer has to say is that...

Genoa Car Problems - Hunter Europa

On possibility is to use a centre or small punch to focus a hammer blow on the remains of the extractor ...... which should then shatter. You should then be able to drill through the mass of the old screw and remove the remains.

Anatomy of a Roller Swaged Fitting

My shrouds are now Dynex Dux so I won't be getting the same problem with the wires, but of course the snatch loads caused by a slack rig will still be transmitted through the rest of the rig. At least the end terminal factor of safety is at least double that of the old cables. Moral of this...

    any hydraulics engineers on here?

Yes, a hook should work, or even a small flat screwdriver - spear the seal and pull it out without damaging the metal faces. Go to a hydraulics seal supplier. I'd bet that seals will be available however old you unit is as they would have used standard parts. Expecting Vetus or any other...

    any hydraulics engineers on here?

I have a very similar piston. It is fairly simple to replace it. You will have to remove the end and the seal sits in a groove in the end casting. You might want to change the other seals when you do this. I'd remove the piston complete and do the job on the bench. Do make sure that you have...
