I have the same setup as OP and find putting reefs in singlehanded slightly easier than shaking them out (but neither is that hard). The trick (in addition to a marked halyard mentioned above) is judging how much to let the mainsheet off. You need little enough power in the sail that you can...
Note however that in serious conditions Roger would be down below with the boat sailing herself, not in the cockpit enjoying the sleigh ride as you might in a larger yacht. Indeed he once broke a rib in a knockdown and then sailed many weeks home.
Additionally he would never close the coast in...
I have sailed engineless (Hunter's Yard) yachts on the Norfolk broads, and a couple of seasons without an engine in my Sigma 33. For me there are two critical features for engineless sailing:
- Nimble sailing ability. When manoeuvring in a channel or harbour you need to guarantee that you will...
My boat is in Granton and with a 33' LOA and ~1.5m draft it's one of the biggest yachts. 36' would look huge here. Many of us in the deeper water dry pretty much upright which only happens because the bottom foot or so of the keel is in the mud. However the H Boats have long keels and don't dig...
It doesn't help much but here is a photo of one of my blocks with the drilled out pin, the bushing and the broken sheave. The amount of wear on the inner diameter of the sheave was impressive, but it seems like maybe you have the opposite problem.
If you search "footblock" you will see various earlier threads on this issue. Typically you need to drill the top off the pin to remove it, destroying it in the process. It's a pretty easy job to turn up a new pin though.
However the top of yours doesn't quite look the same as standard. Either...
Under white sails only singlehanding without an autopilot is no hardship, even on a short course. My club specifically has a handicap adjustment for white sails (declared before the start), although in practice for most races we don't get a single spinnaker.
So your hypothetical cat and mono have the same beam. Do they have the same waterline beam or does the mono have a narrower waterline? Do they both carry the full waterline beam all the way to the ends or does the mono taper to bow and stern?
As a vessel heels slightly a wedge of waterplane is...
I think the simplest thing to try first would be a length of bungee from the reefing line just in front of where it passes through the leach cringle to a point forward on the boom. This should hopefully pull the reefing line forward as the sail is lowered, and not add too much friction during...
Are you thinking of a backstay flicker? If so the purpose is to lift the backstay clear of the roach of the mainsail, especially where it has a full top batten.
When I took the diesel out of my Sigma 33 and put her back in the water the stern was floating around 8 inches higher than normal. I can't say I have noticed a difference in sailing performance/tenderness between her original trim, that bow-down trim, or her new setup with the batteries moved...
They have already infilled part of the western half of Granton Harbour. They had a marine licence last year to do that, I don't know how marine licences and planning permission interact.
Do you have a roller furling genoa? You might find that you would be able to maintain steerage way hove to with a partially furled genoa, with the added bonus that you may be able to tack the genoa across and get it sheeted hard in without using a winch handle. In general when single handed I...
