    Navigating without a log

When Salcombe had dredging done in the 1980s the contractor had to get 2 tugs there from Plymouth The first seagoing tug duly arrived in not too good visibility and its professional skipper was surprised when the proprietor of the firm arrived with the second small river tug in the early...

Why would you build a breakwater that floods on spring high tides?

At high tide in breaking seas the skippers of large vessels have in the past failed to see it. (I know of one seagoing tug that very nearly hit it in the 80s).

    Towing an inflatable

Having downsized last year I have no option but to usually tow the dinghy as even if deflated it takes up too much room, but apart from anything else I always think it's very inelegant to tow it. Best option I have had on previous boats was a small grp dinghy stowed upside down on deck...

    Saltash town Pontoon

I was thinking of stopping there for some refreshments ashore two weeks ago on my way up the river when I brought my new boat round from Salcombe (where I'd paid about £10 a night) but changed my mind when I saw the barrier gate so cooked a meal on my mooring instead.

Are guardwires more of a nuisance than they're worth?

I've attached mine so that they are easily dropped and refastened down alongside the coaming by passing under small u hooks and with pelican hooks on the ends of the wires while leaving them in place forward of the cockpit. Once underway they are quickly clipped back full height. Given the...

    Captain Calamitys

On the news again tonight, in Hayle - fire service called to a cabin fire after clothes set alight by a candle!

    Falmouth visitors haven

Oh dear! I haven't been to Falmouth for many years but it seems like the old days of the harbour master turning a blind eye to anchored boats is long past now!

A short weekend cruise; have you done less?

If I go down to the boat but don't intend actually going anywhere I'll still sometimes move off the mooring and anchor in the area just to avoid the bumps and clonks from the mooring buoy etc. when wind goes against tide.

Buoyancy from bottles...but do they degrade?

I'll be interested to see what condition the c1997 milk containers sealed fore and after in my tender are like when I replace all the woodwork later this year!

What's wrong with long socks and baggy shorts?

Is there any point in standing on...

There was no real problem for me. I had made an early turn of perhaps 10 degrees to keep clear but its bows seemed to be magnetically attracted towards me so I assumed the had seen me and would pass across my bows- then it swung the other way, then back again so as it closed I made a 30...

    Saltash town Pontoon

Used it twice this week to pick up and drop off "crew". No long staying visitors on the outside then but SWMBO had to clamber over bikes on the link span while the quite pleasant fisherman was most disgruntled by the yobs leaping into the water all around him!

Is there any point in standing on...

Well I've tried loading the photo several different ways and given up now, it's my bed time! I thought it should be easier with the 'new' forum. There was plenty of time to avoid the trawler but it wasn't even on autopilot but just erratically zig-zagging along with both crew sorting out the...
