    Sail boat Firsty

Hi all I've had motor/fishing boats, on and off for the past 26 years and have decided I would like to give sailing a try. I live on Canvey Island and have sent e mails out to all local clubs to no avail. Never having stepped foot on a sail boat before, I'm a bit reluctant to sign up for a...

    Advertising a Live aboard

I'm thinking of selling my Bertram 42. Which is an ideal live aboard. Is there a site or broker that promotes specifically live aboard boats? Syd

    Wooden Gaskets

Got to replace one of my through the hull sea cocks. What would be the best hard wood to use to sandwich the hull? Do I leave the wood bare or treat it with epoxy etc? Syd

    Big engine

Fantastic. I thought I'd seen some big engines on the container ships that come into Tilbury (Usually Yanmar) but that beats em hands down

Things to check on shaft drives

I'm having my Berty lifted out in a few weeks time, delayed by arctic conditions. I would like your advice on things to check and how to check them. i.e. Rudders, shafts, bearings etc. I've only ever had stern drives before, so the shaft drive configeration is new ground. Last time it was lifted...

That unwanted phone call . .

I had a similar call to yours. My very first boat was a Birchwood 22. I'd just refitted the intereior. It was on a swinginging mooring on the tidal Thames at Thurrock Yacht Club. About 7.30 on a Saturday morning my phone rang. It was Brian, the bosun. A very caring and thoughtful man. All he...

    Curtains or Blinds dilemma ???

We changed from curtains to blinds in our Bertram 42. It transforms the look of the saloon, i.e. Makes it more modern looking and roomier. Only downside we have noticed is its a bit colder. The curtains when closed kept out any drafts. Shouldn't be a problem if your windows are all sealed up...

    Detroit Diesel. Non Starter

Thanks Syd, between you and Alf I've learned more about my DD's in the past month than I have in the past 10 years. At least i will be able to keep an eye on my mechanic now. More strength to your arm and I wish I could crew for the test run (unfortunately i'll be somewhere in the Corinthian...

    Detroit Diesel. Non Starter

Exactly that Alf. Chugged for a while, progessed into spluttering as other cylinders kicked in then away she went in great plooms of smoke. Cleared within a minute or two. Well chuffed but will keep a close eye on it. Syd

I would love to have my old girl moored out there. The air con still works but we don't get to use it very often in UK.. All the best. Syd
