Free Free Simpson and Lawrence windlass

Been sitting the garage for years. Simpson and Lawrence manual anchor windlass. Two speed operation. Chain gypsy one side ( 5/16 or 8mm chain) rope gypsy on the other side. Would suit a 30ft+ traditional boat. It’s in great condition and ready to install BUT you have to arrange the transport...

    Dournanez festival in July

I was there in 2016 on "Zoe" . Great, chaotic event but wonderful to be part of it. Some interesting tidal/navigational decisions on a daily basis and some wonderful boats to look at. GO!

What is the range of hand-held (5W) vhf radio at sea level ?

Having let the dust settle on this one for a few days I have taken all the comments seriouskly and cross-referenced them to the RYA recommendations. I also discussed the problem with the Coastguards (by phone) who confirmed that a continuous watch on Ch16 is no longer kept . They also commented...

What is the range of hand-held (5W) vhf radio at sea level ?

That's the sort of attitude which can get you into deep trouble. The value of the Forum is that you can learn from the actual, practical experience of other yachtsmen and combine that with content of theoretical shore-based courses. There is life beyond the classroom!

What is the range of hand-held (5W) vhf radio at sea level ?

Thanks JimC. The earlier thread you quoted from. from (2015) contains most of the information I was looking for. The conclusion seems to be that the VHF coverage for hand held VHF is so patchy that a mobile phone for back- up is essential. There are now many waterproof phones available...

What is the range of hand-held (5W) vhf radio at sea level ?

Many owners of small craft carry a hand-held VHF radio on board, primarily for emergency use. With the loss of many local Coastguard stations we now depend on VHF relay stations to transfer the call to the nearest main coastguard station. My nearest relay station is about 8miles away and when I...

    Quick fix

Don't" turn it right side up and fill with water." Boats are specifically designed to deal with water pressure from the outside only. If you fill it with water you will create other leaks as the wood is pushed away from the frames.

    Living on the Med

First point is that the Med and particularly Greece is awash with boats for sale so you don't have to think about canals (unless you really want to). Second, there is no such thing as "the Med." What I mean is that it is impossible to generalise between France, Spain, Sardinia, Tunisia , Greece...

    Rot Prevention?

I have an open wooden boat and the bilges are always wet. Is there anything sensible I can do to inhibit the onset of rot in these wet timbers. Suggestions so far are 1) Pour a bottle of bleach into the bilges 2) Regularly pour buckets of seawater into the bilges 3) Pour in liquid weedkiller 4)...

    Choosing a boat

We sailed to the Med in 2006 and spent five years as liveaboards. Since then I have been back often and sailed on friend's boats. If I was doing it again I would buy in the Med in Turkey or Greece. If you are planning for a relatively short time it might be worth trying an ad. offering to lease...

I have 2 out of 3 blades on my Brunton autoprop.

Depending on the model of Brunton, you may be able to replace the blade without removing the whole propellor assembly. Check with Bruntons.

    Cooling my engine too much?

Your engine generates about 60Kw and if it is 30% efficient then you may have about 40kw in waste heat. Now a lot of that is radiated from the engine block so lets guess that 20kw is available for water heating. That should be enough to heat water and run a radiator with the engine running but...

Chain size for a Simpson and Lawrence 500 Manual Windlass?

It's a bit sad when you reply to your own post but I have made some progress. I went to the excellent Cox engineering site athttps://coxengineering.sharepoint.com/Pages/Chaindefinitions.aspx and found from the chain dimensions listed there that the appropriate chain is either 8mm where the...
