I went ahead and did it, so I thought I'd resurrect my old thread on here to report back my findings, in case anyone else has ever mulled it over.
I fitted a new Ultraflex T71FC cable helm with the three planetary gear system, (but no anti-feedback clutch), together with a brand new M66 cable...
I've scoured the Internet looking for a manual as well, and drawn a blank, except for mention of it on here.
I bought my M298 ,new, back in 2001, and have just started to use it again, but can't find where on earth I put the manual, so it must have been lost.
It remained unused for a few years...
Thanks again for the further replies, all ideas and suggestions gratefully received !
I priced up the hydraulic option, and using ultraflex, the ram is around £300, and the pump about £200. I could save money on the pipes by using 8mm copper, but it still runs out at over £500.
I'm going to...
Thanks for the very quick and helpful replies (as is often the case on here :) )
Yes, hydraulic is still an irritating temptation, with other significant advantages, like non-critical cable/pipe runs.
Staying with the mechanical option though, I'm thinking about the difference between racks...
Hi,
I have a Sealine 23 with a single AQ205A V6 4.3l petrol engine on a DPA duoprop outdrive leg.
The original non-power assisted steering is via a rack and pinion cable, operating directly on the tiller arm over the drive.
There's around 2" to 3" of play at the edge of the 15" wheel before...
My wife thinks I'm an anorak though, but I can't help myself !
Re the further comments on Hamerite, I've found that all the current varieties, (smooth, hammered, sprays, tins) do wash off easily with petrol, even after the 30 days of curing.
Even the engine lacquer that I used does need some...
A nasty surprise, but at least with no long term injury (hopefully), the lesson has now been learnt in a way that's unlikely to be forgotten !
I remember a similar mistake that I made a few years back, that I was very lucky to escape without injury.
I needed to cut a large ( 5" ) diameter hole...
Thanks for the kind offer of info Ian.
I can remember how to use most of the controls, but i was trying to find out everything about it again.
As Donald Rumsfeld said, "The unknown unknowns" :)
Absolutely right.
I found Hammerite very poor for resisting fuel, just like most paints.
For best durability and heat resistance I always use engine lacquer, available quite cheaply from car accessory dealers. Here's my Volvo petrol engine repainted (by brush) with "Carplan" engine lacquer...
M-298 Manual (again - sorry !)
I've searched the forum, and I don't think there's been any recent responses on this old question, (but I apologise if I missed one ! :) )
I've had a Silva Star M-298 from new, having bought it about 10 years ago down at Hamble. It wasn't used for a few years...
I have a Volvo Penta AQ205 Petrol (GM 4.3litre V6) on a DuoProp leg on a Sealine 218.
It has raw cooling straight from the stainless steel inlet pipe on the leg, via a shaped rubber hose to the rubber impellor pump on the front of the engine crankshaft pulley.
I use the boat on the Broads...
