    FYI for Greece Cruising

Watch out in Kalamata then. I was fined €300 for not having a TL two years ago. Like you my boat is SSR and was documented as being in Greece on Brexit day. I spent days arguing with them, backed by support from Chris Robb, to no avail. Eventually I had to buy a TL, pay the fine and leave.

    GRP Water Tank Repair

Many thanks to Trident and Geem. Very helpful and I will look into both, as well as filters.

    GRP Water Tank Repair

I would be grateful for any advice. The GRP water tank on my 1974 long-keeled boat was cracked and leaking into the bilge. The tank is a GRP moulding conforming to the shape of the keel situated under the saloon sole. There are two small round inspection hatches. I cut a circa 12” square hole...

GREEK TRANSIT LOG ISSUE - IMPORTANT

As soon as we tied up at the port in Kalamata, the PP visited and asked me to take my docs to their office which is quite normal in larger ports. It had happened previously at other ports on the way south but I was never asked to produce a TL. The PP at Kalamata listened to my reason for not...

GREEK TRANSIT LOG ISSUE - IMPORTANT

Many thanks to Chris for chasing this up with the Customs. This will not get me my €150 back but let’s hope it will hasten the training required. Both the Customs and Port Police in Kalamata have no concept of the modus operandi of we cruising sailors. They seem to think that the purpose of...

GREEK TRANSIT LOG ISSUE - IMPORTANT

Thanks for your reply. My boat was built in Italy in 1974 and has remained in the EU ever since. Therefore, my understanding is that she is considered VAT paid in the EU.

GREEK TRANSIT LOG ISSUE - IMPORTANT

My boat was in Greece on 31.12.2020 for which I have documentary proof. I launched on 2nd April this year in Preveza and arrived yesterday in Kalamata. The Port Police asked for my Transit Log. When I told them I do not need one they sent me to the Customs who insisted I buy a TL (18 months)...

    Soft core deck question

RM. I agree that working from underneath makes sense in your case. I have an all in one piece headlining which would make this difficult. I have also heard of the Allen key method. I think after the Allen Key trick, you then blow hot air in to dry before vacuuming out. In my case, I wanted to...

    Soft core deck question

Thanks AP and Down West. I accept that it will be heavier, and I also accept that it may well not fill the voids everywhere, but if it adds strength (which I think it will) then I will be happy. It will be interesting to apply the famous ball hammer audio test tomorrow, once it has cured!

    Soft core deck question

Thank you AntarcticPilot. I realise that the right thing to do is to cut away the top surface, clean out all the deteriorated foam, replace with sheets of new foam and re-glass the top. In fact I brought out sheets of Airex foam and chopped strand matting to Greece to do just that. This was...

    Soft core deck question

Thank you, all. I am very encouraged. Keith-i, thanks for confirming that the foam could well have deteriorated over such a long time. The good thing is I do not have to contend with the problem of damp, which I had expected. Jonathan, thanks for your help over replicating the pattern if...

    Soft core deck question

Grateful for advice and opinions. I have a 1974 Alpa 11.50 (Italian) with some spongy/springy patches on the foredeck. When I tap the deck with a ball hammer I get a dull thud in the areas of springiness. I therefore assumed that I had damp in the balsa sandwich core and eventually resolved...

Greece TL - Conversion of 18 Month to UTL

Mr Cassandra, Presumably when they said you were not allowed to move, that was for COVID reasons? Even so, it seems odd that they therefore say that you need no TL. Lots of different interpretations of the TL rules at the moment........
