    Horseshoe or lifebuoy ring

Much more sensible and easy for everyone to wear a proper lifejacket. If someone is in the water and possibly in distress it is well nigh impossible to make proper use of a horseshoe or ring, whereas a proper lifejacket does it all for you. Throwing a ring or horseshoe to someone is liable to...

    Shackles

They say to never use stainless steel shackles underwater, especially salt water, and never use clear/white cable ties as they degrade in sunlight. Use black ones.

    Yamaha / Mariner 2hp coil

I have most of the bits of a Mariner (?) 2hp. Is it the plate below the flywheel which carries the coil, points, condenser etc? PM me with your phone no. and I can send you a photo.

    Diesel disposal

Clean it as described above and put it in your central heating oil tank even if it uses 28sec. It will mix and burn OK.

    Cleaning The Engine Down

The simplest method I have found, and I have used it for about sixty years now, is to clean the greasy bits with paraffin and a stiff brush. 28 sec central heating oil is really paraffin so you can use that too. When all the dirt is loosened wash it off with a water jet and it leaves the...

    Teak veneer

About 15 years ago I had the same problems with my Westerly 33 and my local boatyard advised me to use a coating called Patina. It is a gel which you rub on with a cloth and without any preparation of the varnished surface except cleaning. Really bad areas can have several coats as required. It...

    Oil on water

This technique was tried by the tanker Pass Of Drumochter whilst trying to save passengers from the sinking Princess Victoria in the North Channel way back in the early 50's. I cannot remember the details now or whether it was effective or not.

Chuck key for Fobco pillar drill ?

De-grease your chuck as best you can (dishwashers are good for this if Mrs doesn't mind), and try to remove as much rust as possible by wire brushing. Then soak the chuck in a 10% solution of molasses for a week or so and it should come out like new.

    Screwfix OB1 sealant / adhesive

I was only repeating what my local builders supplier, where I bought my CT1, told me what the reps from the CT1 company had been telling him. Don't shoot the messenger

    Screwfix OB1 sealant / adhesive

CTEC_NI_Limited said: This statement that you have made publicly is malicious, slanderous, without foundation and completely untrue. Unless you retract this immediately, we will be taking legal action against you in the High Court Belfast, where you will be affixed with all costs. We advise to...

    Screwfix OB1 sealant / adhesive

Thanks to Brexit the manufacturers of CT1 in Northern Ireland have moved production of CT1 to Latvia or Lituania or thereabouts. The workers in the old CT1 factory have decided to continue producing the product, with some additional ingredients to improve it, and are now marketing it as OB1 but...

Fogging oil - what and how to use?

I wouldn't use WD40 anywhere on a boat to prevent corrosion or for anything else. It does not prevent corrosion. It washes off leaving a lovely clean surface that rusts beautifully. :disgust::ambivalence:

Running a 2-stroke dry after use

It's a misconception that you can run a carb dry, you can't. There will always be a level of fuel in the float bowl and this can only be removed by laying the engine on its side and draining it that way. Unfortunately that leads to the possibility of residual water in the passageways running...

    Outboard woe.

Only a small bit of water is ejected through the tell tale just to let you see that water is being pumped. The main cooling water is ejected back into the leg where it muffles the exhaust and is pushed out to the sea underwater. I don't think a gasket as you suggest is necessary or indeed ever...
