    Check your engine mounts!

I check my nuts often. A second opinion is always good and my wife helps. I want to ask my wife's sister, who is a doctor, to have a quick feel but my wife is less keen on this idea. All this talk of spanners sounds extremely odd. You guys....

    Tools for through hulls

Angle grinder. Really easy, no risk to the hull if you do it properly. Properly means counterintuitively going straight at the flange, with the disk perpendicular to the hull. Mincing around at an acute angle is no good. You can easily see when you have nearly ground through the flange.

    Replacing turnbuckles in-situ

If I understand the rig correctly, you say there are two shrouds per side, so two independent turnbuckles. This makes it a pretty low risk move, the mast will stay up with the lowers and forestay/backstay alone AS LONG AS the fore/aft tension is unwound. What I would do: - unwind both cap...

Where am I going wrong here?

Broadly agree. You're also constrained by the discharge ability of your house batteries unless you specifically optimise them for this sort of (ab)use. Our experience with small portable induction hob (as addition to our standard gas stove) was it was great on shorepower, but otherwise a...

    Lithium batteries on cars/boats

Hi all, in respect of various impressive knowledge on here, I would love thoughts on the following. (also relevant to the lithium consideration on boats). We need an additional small car. Planned usage will be perfect "electric territory" i.e, daily 20-mile return trip with easy overnight...

Line ashore anchoring - how its done?

The usual form, similar to fore/aft anchoring at the limit of your rode, is to take the entire line in the dinghy, secure ashore, and then return to the yacht. It's hard to pay out the line from the dinghy if it's attached to a gyrating yacht, and there's a greater risk of entanglement, and it...

    Solar panel support leg

How about: A leg made of canopy fittings, but permanently fitted, with the lower fitting able to slide fore and aft, and both ends hinged. When deployed, it should hit a stop and be tied horizontally (in the direction of the stop).

    Through Hull Sense Check

That is exactly what we had on Dufour (2006).

Your feelings on the state of the second-hand yacht market?

No idea on the market Offer-wise, it's much like housing. There can be an offer hanging unaccepted; an offer accepted and paperwork pending; an offer formally agreed and survey underway. In the first case the seller/broker has made no commitment so, as a rival buyer, you are definitely free...

    Cold antifouling

One good tip is on a sunny but frosty day, is leave it in the car like a mini-greenhouse, and paint in the afternoon. Warm paint goes on nicely.

Is this normal??? Brokers and engines

Definitely OK for the broker not to start the engine. The broker might not even know how....or more likely as has been said, they don't know if it's ready to start I.e. coolant checked, fuel pipes open, seacock open, impeller correctly fitted. If it has antifreeze in then it's a pain to start...
