Old flares and bonfire night ?

I've arranged to take all my out of date flares to Coastguard. Chandlers I've tried have no provision themselves. CG were extremely helpful and would have collected them from boat but wished the manufacturers would take responsibility for disposal. The appaling plight of Duncan referred to...

Old flares and bonfire night ?

I was thinking of firing a couple of flares off in an empty field on Nov 5 . Is this illegal ? One would be an offshore parachute type. I don't see a safety prob but could be if failed to fire. Is there an official procedure to dispose of unused old flares ?

    ST50 Wind

Have looked previously using both "Raymarine" and "Autohelm" search and again last night (05/05/05) and today but have not seen the ST50 Wind display - there was a transducer and also Depth,Speed,Tridata and a tempting new ST50 GPS. Rick

    Cold starting Yanmars

I have a 3GM which is perfect in warmer weather but unless the 2 x 100Ah batts were well charged and used on the "BOTH" setting on the switch in cold weather would drain the batts before starting. I doubled both banks so even with moderate charge can give a good spin when on BOTH position. You...

    radar arch

Re: Depends... The term "Power Tower" covers lots of different designs. If the boat's really old you might like to consider their arch rivals Broom Handles.com.

    Wave heights.

All suggested sites seem to use the same few buoys for data. There must be huge variations even close to these reference points-partic inshore- and I can't help but think unless there's one pretty much in your area the data is of little or misleading use(and might be why there is so little data)...

    Seacock pipes won't go on

Reinforcing like thread on nut In addition to moderate warmth - or poss instead in some cases- I've found turning the whole pipe screws itself on when using spiral reinforced pipe.

    Filtering WC Inlet

The vetus water strainer has a clear screw-off top so would be easy to inspect/maintain. I have one for the engine and only occcasionally have to clean it out. I just hope the toilet pump will create sufficient suction to enable a proper flow through the unit because I don't think the...

    Filtering WC Inlet

I'm thinking of fitting a water strainer to my toilet intake - same as raw water intake strainer for engine,Vetus Type 140 for 19mm id pipe. I am moved to try this after finding what looked like leeches under the rim. I would welcome any comments or advice. Thanks Rick

    Dayskipper Correspondence Course

I also did NMCS course. Very thorough and enjoyable but in any correspondence course there will be ambiguities which I know I agonised over. You have a course tutor you can ring and I should have done so. Providing you can put in the time though it's good fun receiving the packages and I did...

    aluminium anchors?

No connection with spade apart from buying an A100 aluminium one for my Snowgoose cat . Performs well enough but at 9kgs won't self launch with all the chain attached(suppose I could detach the chain) so have invested in an A140 at 15Kg but as yet have not tried it. I thought like you the...
