Yacht gets wedged under UK railway bridge

Not sure but 9' 6" rings a bell, beyond that you're into Special Types/Abnormal Loads. I think width restrictions are only signed if it's less than standard maximum width of 8' 3" or whatever.

    Hydraulic jack maintenance

I disagree. If a knackered old seal fails completely it will drop very quickly.

Perhaps Brunel left accurate records and Railtrack/Network Rail threw them in a skip. I did hear some rumours .

    Hydraulic jack maintenance

Throw it away. Or destroy it trying to undo the hex cap, then throw it away.

Who really makes those branded plastic toolboxes?

Agreed. I recently bought one to store a 500kg chain block, they're a pain to carry around loose!

    Gas regulator

Never paint anything like this. There's the danger of blocking vents or other working parts.

    Reluctant crook…

A good question. It's hard to know who does what and how much has been "outsourced". I don't even know if Border Force is civil service or contractors. What I do know is we're all paying for it!

Does anyone ever do man not-overboard practice?

No, it's you that's talking bollocks. A fall onto a single side attachment will kill you, it is not a "commonly chosen" way of working aloft. Lifting with a single side attachment will cause serious injury.

Does anyone ever do man not-overboard practice?

Wrong! With a side attachment the body will bend while lifting, potential for serious injury. Proper harnesses have the lifting point at the back, between the shoulders.

    Reluctant crook…

It's not fine to use, it's illegal. The law doesn't say anything about "emergencies".

Does anyone ever do man not-overboard practice?

As I read it, the big problem with this product is a LJ is not a lifting harness. Or should I say the majority of LJ's are not designed for lifting a person. Slipping out is one possibility.

    Windlass why electric

Without giving power and torque that still means nothing. I give up.

    Windlass why electric

You're missing something there. A spec saying "series wound" tells you nothing about the load capacity of that particular motor.

    Windlass why electric

Yes I know all that. To keep it simple, I was assuming the cost and weight of pipes and valves equalled the cost and weight of cables and relays. I think that was a reasonable assumption.
