Yachting Monthly 5 tonner - help needed

An old friend, who has since passed away, had this boat out of the water in Dartmouth. It has now become the responsibility of his daughter. The boat was in good condition, but over the last two years has slowly declined. I believe it still to be in sound condition, but is looking in need of...

    Boat Addiction?

My wife also said I loved the boat more than her.......................................I thought for a while then said, you forgot about the dog, Landrover, oow and that perky blonde waitress at the Ferryboat Inn. Funny old thing divorce!

    Life jacket losing air

I had the same problem. On the Hammer jackets the bottle is inside the bladder thus it has to pass through via a seal. It's usually at this point that it leaks air. If you reassemble it and wet the seal before doing so then this can stop the leak. It may take a few attempts. Good luck

    Best Material for Mooring lines?

Nylon. They have greater elasticity over polyester/poly prop and will take the shock waves of snatching, which is why it's best used for anchor warp. It does go stiff after a while but I take my lines off every winter and give them a hot soapy wash. It seems to work

    The Black Spot

Any thoughts on how to rid your teak of the black spot. You know that deep ingrained marking that blights your teak when the varnish has gone past its' best. I have been told that bleach will do it but I'm reluctant to have diluted bleach flow over the gel coat for fear of damage. I tried a...

    Gel coat staining

If all else fails cut it out and do a gelcoat repair. It will be more permenant than painting

    Hasler self steering

A friend of mine is trying to mount a Hasler self steering system to the stern of his Twister. He has bought this second hand with no manual. We have hung it off a bench and it would seem that it sits on the afterdeck and hangs over the stern. The blade then must hang over the stern, beyond the...

Buying a boat - which GRP

There lots of good advice, but some conflicting. We all have our opinions! A 4 year old 39 foot Moody is going to be an expensive investment and as you mentioned you don't want to make expensive mistakes A qualified surveyor will look at both boats for you, based on your criteria for wanting a...

    AWB Spray hood fitting

The few items I have fixed to the deck I've done just that drilled a pilot hole.I also used a counter sink bit ,slowly, to take the edge off the hole as previous attempts ended in the gelcoat breaking around the hole as the screw drove in. Obviously use stainless screws and seal the fitting to...

    Cost of sails

Now's the time. you'll get 20% off at the show, well I did at southampton in September, I guess the London show will be similar. My 34 footer cost about £2.8k but that's full battened main and crusing laminate tri radial genoa. Dacron prices, std batterns were around the £2k mark from Westaways...

    teak, what country?

Try Robbins Timber, Bristol. They are very helpful, as is K.J.Howells in Poole. If you need it machining and profiling, then Robbins will do that, I'm not sure of Howells capabilities and I know he's at the show this week and next. Howells 01202 665724. Robbins 01179 633136. Both will despatch...

    Rotostay

I don't think this will help! I have just done the same as you with a rotostay of similar vintage. I couldn't even remove the screws as they were so badly corroded. My local rigger tells me it's typical of the breed and there's not much you can do but replace it. (no he wasn't selling me a new...
