    Which motor boat?

Not too sure about that, there seems to be quite a lot of cheapish boats at under £30K then they seem to get quite thin on the ground untill you get to £100K I did buy a long wheelhouse Lochin 33 a few years ago at a little over £40K but there's not many of them around. The standard legnth...

Read PBO? We would like your opinion.

Practical Boat Owner???? This issue has been discussed before. Let's look at the title: Practical: This (at least in my opinion) means people who alrady have reasonable aptitude and would like to develop skills even further. Boat: Something that floats and reasonably supports the weight of...

    Re-finishing cabin floorboards

I can't understand why people use that teak and holly veneered ply for cabin soles. The outer veneers are so thin that IMO it's just not fit for purpose, however... Water based stain can be good, you need to wet the surface of the wood before you apply it, leave it to dry and then sand it...

    Extending bow roller

Before you do anything have a good look around your marina and see just how many bow rollers are bent or damaged. The more you extend one the stronger it has to be to resist distorting. A couple of years ago, I chose to replace the bow roller on my Lochin 33. The more I looked, the more I...

    Lopo Light or Hella LED's

There was a very similar thread to this in the last few days. I had a set of Aquasignal series 32 (port , stbd and stern) the port lamp failed, the stbd didn't look as if it was going to last much longer but they were replaced even after five years with no quibble with a current set of Series...

    Repairing a fibreglass dashboard

Hi Sam There are numerous materials you could use: decorative laminate such as Formica or Trespa, painted sheet metal such as aluminium, brushed stainless steel sheet etc. I did see a carbon fibre looking material at the boat show that was being used for custom instrument panels. I thing that...

    Repairing a fibreglass dashboard

Hi Sam I wasn't thinking "stick on stuff" but more along the lines of a solid material between 1 and 3mm thick that was screwed on rather than glued on. Even if you restored the GRP, which isn't that difficult, you'd probably want to move things or change things in the future and you'd be back...

    Repairing a fibreglass dashboard

How about fitting a new decoratve panel over the existing panel in aluminium, carbon fibre, wood grain or what ever?

    Lopolight - long term feedback

As I said in my original post, I didn't actually buy them as a power-saving measure; I bought them based upon the claims of a 50,000 hour service life. Fit and forget or so I thought. It seems more like they just give up the ghost after 50,000 hours of existance - about 5 years!

    Lopolight - long term feedback

Well, nothing on this thread that gives me any confidence in fitting the replacement set of LED nav lights. Anyone know what nav lights are fitted to RNLI lifeboats?

    LED tube

No - but but from the experiences I've had with LED nav lights, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. See thread about Lopolights.

    Replacement bow thruster batteries

Yeah, junk the separate bow thruster battery bank, buy some heavy cable (circa 120mm2) and connect your bow thruster to your (or one of your) engine start battery banks. I know heavy cable is expensive but it lasts longer than batteries - so end of problem!

    Lopolight - long term feedback

Interesting Thread! I fitted a pair of Aquasignal Series 32 LED nav lights about 4 yers ago. The port one failed and the starboard one worked but looked all cracked up inside. I also bought a stern light but had never got around to fitting it (old tungsten one still works). I wasn't worried...

What thickness ply for making backing pads ?

This man's getting close! Try 12mm delrin available from several suppliers including RS Components. Not cheap but very good. You won't need penny washers as it won't compress.

What's the strangest/oddest thing you've seen at sea?

A while ago now, I'd been fishing for a few days with some mates over the Princess Alice Bank (about 50 miles south of Horta in the Azores) and a few hundred yards away, we saw what we thought were the fins of either big sharks or orca. As the marlin seemed to have disappeared we motored over to...
