Reefing line c**k up

Thanks for the URL. Have found the diagrammes - looks like a nightmare. But, if I can get the internal block thing to the aft of the boom, I should be able to unscrew the outboard end fitting with a 'Torx' screwdriver - is this a form of Allen Key? Big mistake!!

    Reefing line c**k up

Well, I've made a classic cock up. Took the mainsail down for valeting, and then started to pull through the reefing lines to tidy them up. Only problem was that the boom end of the line was no longer secured to the end of the boom, and so it disappeared up the boom! Anyway, I succeeded to get...

What are the South Coast don't miss harbours?

Re: What are the South Coast don\'t miss harbours? You are missing Studland Bay - great stop off anchorage from Dartmouth, and saves one hour in and out of Poole. Reasonable holding, and its free!
Jeremy Flynn Dawn Chorus

    Mid-life crisis. nb

Don\'t do it! I bought a big bike before I reached 40. Last rode a knackered Suzuki GT250 as a student - would hardly do 70mph as it desparately needed a rebore, but I could hear the big end rumbling, and couldn't afford to get a new crank as well as a rebore. Anyway, I'm not far from you on...

    Battery charger voltage

Mystery solved The reason for the large difference in volts when being charged is that Bavaria shore-power chargers are factory fitted only to charge the domestic battery! Units retrofitted by Opal in UK are wired up for both. Thanks to the comments on this link, I've also learnt that 13.3v...

    Battery charger voltage

Thanks John. If I were to summarise your helpful explanation, it would be that a battery taken through a fully charging cycle regularly will consume the amount of water I'm getting through. My domestic battery is not using any more water now than 3 years ago, so hopefully thats not a sign of it...

    Battery charger voltage

Hmm, gets even more mysterious. The batteries are under a saloon berth, not near the engine, so not unduly warm (but I do leave a dehumidifier going) So, I'm using more water than normal, but have a float charge of 13.3v on one, 12.9v on another, and an altenator charge under the optimal...

    Battery charger voltage

That was my next plan. Ive unplugged the charger, and will check the voltages on both batteries. Then, I'll turn on the charger, and see what reading I get. I've e-mailed the German charger manufacturer, but doubt I'll get a reponse. Plan to phone Opal tomorrow, and see whether standard fit-out...

    Battery charger voltage

Hmm, that sounds logical - why bother to shore-power tyhe start battery, as it gets plenty of power from the engine after its been used. Think I should ask Opal
Jeremy Flynn Dawn Chorus

    Battery charger voltage

Interesting points, Thanks. I reckon about 5mm per month of water per cell is the typical amount. The start battery is brand new - the old one suddenly died at 3 years. Suspicious? When charging by the altenator, the start battery was getting 14.15v and the domestic 14.05v. Am planning to get...

    Battery charger voltage

Ive been having to top up the domestic 140aH battery with water every 4 weeks, and I've measured the charge voltage from the charger. The engine battery seems to stick at 12.9v, but the domestic battery is being charged at 13.3v, even when fully charged. Can anyone confirm whether this is too...

    Radar

Given the cost in your time, or someone else's labour, I would strech to a JRC 1500. Its a bit more expensive, but the larger radome means better discrimination. A radar (plus a day's RYA training, and own-boat practise) does not do much for reduced viz in the Solent, but once out makes reduced...

    Ebay (nb)

As per everyone else...+ a few tips 1. Set yourself a minimum saving vs. best price from a traditional source. Kelkoo is good for getting a feel for best new prices. Seen Navman plotters go about discount chandler prices 2. Make sure you know exactly what model no. you are bidding for, esp...

    Ask the coastguard?

Re: Coastwatch phone numbers Great posting, Philip. Have printed and laminated your list for future use. There's nothing like a real live view on actual conditions, and should make for easier decisions on how many miles off a headland.
Jeremy Flynn Dawn...

Tenders - capacity, weight and stowed sizes

Now the kids are getting larger out 2.4m tender really does not carry 4 safely. Its tempting just to get the next size up, but I don't want to get something much heavier, nor something too big to be carried across the transom, or stowed in a space 115 * 55 * 35. Anyone else been through this...
