Many thanks to those who have replied. Next week i will change eng. and gear oil and compare what comes out with what goes in.
It appears to me that the gb is well above full and engine is a bit below full.
Cheers peter.
Crankcase oil level
High and low level marks look a long way apart 68mm and do not resemble the images in operator manual. I wonder if this is not correct stick for engine.
Gearbox oil level
Dipstick has one engraved ring close to bottom of stick but has been filled well above this level...

Three Long Blasts
This used to be a regular practice when passing other company vessels deep sea, with large ensign and signal letters hoisted.
New ships sailing on maiden voyage also gave 3 longs to tugs pilot boat etc, at the shipbuiling town Im from (when they used to build ships that is)
Hi Paul
The gearbox is a Yanmar K........(not onboard at present). The dipstick has no marks on it other than a single engraved ring near the bottom, plus a couple of breather holes - hence the uncertainty.
Rgs Peter.
I am about to fit a Sterling proD charger connecting to start and dom. batteries. If one
battery is full (start) and the other half full (dom.) how will the charger handle this?
We dont have shorepower and rely on pet. genny for recharging.Would it be better to only connect to dom. battery...
Hi Paul, thanks for your reply.
The engine is a yanmar 4lh dte, the filter is a volvo, and there is a drain tap on the bottom.
My concern is will air get in system if i open it(drain tap) when tank level is below filter level, or does it have a non return valve, perhaps you turn the handle...
Would like to know the procedure for draining off any water with this type of filter, when the tank level is below the filter.
There doesnt appear to be a bleed screw in the top so how is system vented when changing filters.
Does it come to bits when the brass handle is unscrewed.?
Lastly...
