I would write a letter to PBO with this query. Your opening post very much captures the spirit of PBO - I’m sure they would be keen to help. I love the idea of a father and son building a boat together. Must have been a fantastic project!
Captain, not sure if you’re aware of the new forum response charge of £20 per comment posted on here. Plesse send any monies owed to the YBW financial team (cheques payable to Fred Russell please).
Best bang for yer buck will be one of the Onwa units then, as most AIS devices are ‘black boxes’ designed to display their info on a separate chart plotter.
I bought a Matsutec HA102 (I think) and it’s been great. It’s a send and receive ‘black box’ that displays info on any NMEA 0183 equipped plotter. Cost less than £200, hasn’t missed a beat in 3 years.

Glad you sorted it out BG. To you and other EV100 etc owners, I would definitely recommend adding a rudder position sensor if you see one come up cheap on ebay (as they often do)
Hmm, admittedly I’ve only had dealings with the alternator on my boat - but that one (Hitachi) is isolated ground. Same for the Prestolite one I was given. I’ve been doing a fair bit of reading on the subject due to my Hitach alt dying!
Old thread on subject here:
