PBO Article from late seventies Conversion of Outboard to TVO or Paraffin

I would write a letter to PBO with this query. Your opening post very much captures the spirit of PBO - I’m sure they would be keen to help. I love the idea of a father and son building a boat together. Must have been a fantastic project!

The cost of checking in to a foreign country.

Captain, not sure if you’re aware of the new forum response charge of £20 per comment posted on here. Plesse send any monies owed to the YBW financial team (cheques payable to Fred Russell please).

    Lewmar winch screw

I’d get a (manual) impact driver on that and give it a few taps. If that didn’t work, and winch is working, I’d leave well alone and use as is.

    Cheap AIS

Best bang for yer buck will be one of the Onwa units then, as most AIS devices are ‘black boxes’ designed to display their info on a separate chart plotter.

    Cheap AIS

I bought a Matsutec HA102 (I think) and it’s been great. It’s a send and receive ‘black box’ that displays info on any NMEA 0183 equipped plotter. Cost less than £200, hasn’t missed a beat in 3 years.

    SYH Scrubbing Grid

£45 not too bad really is it? Round here there are a few beaches to dry out on (which I do use) but the boat will be sitting on mud, not sand and sinks in a bit. On my lift keel boat that sometimes results in the prop and wing keel (Parker 31) being hard to get to. Working on a nice concrete...

    SYH Scrubbing Grid

Yes, I know, old thread. I’m just posting this as an update and a correction to info posted above in case people search for info on the grid in future. The base of the scrubbing grid is 1.6m above CD, and not 1 metre as posted above. Cost as of today is £45.

    Taylor Bulkhead Diesel Heaters safety?

I think the £80 Chinese diesel heater did for them really, which is a shame as Taylors heaters are lovely things. Still miss mine.

    Survey

    Mine spotted something I wouldn’t have spotted. Not a deal-breaker, more of a deal-improver.

    Electric cooking onboard.

I’ve a single induction hob, and a 700w microwave. Both will run off my 1200w inverter, as will a travel kettle. I cook on electric when plugged in to shore power or if I’m out and about and the gas runs out. I have 230 ah of lead acid and 160w of solar. When I go off for longer trips (can’t at...

Raymarine Evolution tillerpilot won’t hold course

Glad you sorted it out BG. To you and other EV100 etc owners, I would definitely recommend adding a rudder position sensor if you see one come up cheap on ebay (as they often do)

    Alternator regulator temporary fix?

Hmm, admittedly I’ve only had dealings with the alternator on my boat - but that one (Hitachi) is isolated ground. Same for the Prestolite one I was given. I’ve been doing a fair bit of reading on the subject due to my Hitach alt dying! Old thread on subject here: Insulated/isolated alternator
