Americas Cup - and Alinghi drops out

Yes, true. The cup has a really big problem though if the undoubted success (in terms of interest) of the last cup doesn't translate into more teams, but instead to multiple teams and sponsors pulling out.

Americas Cup - and Alinghi drops out

I think the reduction in the sailing team was more than offset by the people monitoring the systems etc back at base. The AC75s required 8 after all. You could do a modern 72 footer with 11-12 maybe.

Should yachting take you out of your comfort zone?

To be outside your comfort zone doesn't require you to be terrified. Just that it's something new that you need to think about and concentrate on, rather than it being routine.

Americas Cup - and Alinghi drops out

I predict a damp squib, followed by a hiatus. Sadly the foiling, whilst technically impressive, has pushed the cost so obscenely high that "standard" corporate backed teams aren't viable. You need a Billionaire prepared to spend big for the glory.

Americas Cup - and Alinghi drops out

Next cup will be a 2 team showdown between NZ and ITA. No other challengers. You heard it here first.

Should yachting take you out of your comfort zone?

Not at all. I'm a confident, experienced sailor. I went into the med charter sure that I would be able to med moor. But before that charter it wasn't in my comfort zone. Because I'd never done it before, so I had to think about it, and plan it in a way that I simply don't have to do for...

Should yachting take you out of your comfort zone?

Yeah... You're starting to sound like a bit of an arrogant know-it-all at this point mate... In sailing, almost by definition, anything you've not done before is outside your comfort zone. The first time you head out as skipper, you're out of your comfort zone. You might be competent, but...

Should yachting take you out of your comfort zone?

For me, when racing with the full crew I absolutely expect to be taken outside of my comfort zone from time to time. Last year's RTI was a prime example. When cruising with the kids, if I'm outside of my comfort zone I have messed up big time.

    Wind/speed

I have B&G instruments. That is showing true wind by my definition. You seem to have a small confusion, in that the "True wind" as per my definition does not alter depending on if the vessel is going with or against the tide. It is simply the difference between the velocity of the wind...

    Bowsprits - A couple questions?

Even the racy boats with long prods don't fly jib and code at the same time. Instead they fly a staysail, tacked approx 2/3 of the way from the mast to the forestay. That should give you an idea of the seperation required. e.g.

    Wind/speed

Oh Chiara. I thought you were better than this! In definition terms, exactly as DJE posted above. Apparent - wind felt by boat as it sails. True - wind felt by drifting boat - difference in velocity between air and water Ground wind - wind as measured by anchored boat or bramblemet etc I...

    Going downwind.

Depends on wind speed. The stronger the wind, the narrower the gybe angle. Flying kites I'm doing 140TWA in 6 knots, 160 in 9 knots, 170 in 14 knots, as low as I dare in 18, then come back to 155-160 over 20 knots as I'm on the plane at that point. However, with a genoa on a Starlight, I'd...

    “Production boat” for ARC

Dad had a Dufour performance 40 for a while, only sold due to health reasons. Awesome boat. No huge weaknesses that I was aware of, never heard of any rudder issues either, but then he bought new in 2005 and sold in 2017, so how they're holding up since I wouldn't know. We didn't do any...

    Woman overboard drowned

I'm not sure I agree with that. There are big fleets of keelboats racing around the country without safety boat cover and there isn't really a long history of incidents that would have turned out differently with safety boat cover. Those boats that are self righting don't really get into the...

POGO joining the IRC shorthanded game...
