    Whale Bilge Pump.

Just a thought. Whale pumps, in good working order, do not require much pump priming. Your initial thought on the subject, i.e. a split pipe is a possibility. Another is that, if the old pump was ineffective for any length of time, the new one could be lifting all the gunge the old one...

    UKHO/RYA Chartplotter

And the morning and the evening were the sixth day! Behold the arrival of the Garmin serial to USB lead c/w CD rom containing drivers for 98, 2000 & Xp. Follow the simple instructions; plug in the GPS; remember to tell the chartplotter software the name of the psuedo serial port (COM4 in my...

    UKHO/RYA Chartplotter

Hi all, Great response - much appreciated. Have decided, on the balance of your answers, to spend the difference between expensive antifouling and the cheap and cheerful stuff on a 'kosher' Garmin adapter c/w driver as this seems to be the crux of the matter. Will await arrival with baited...

    UKHO/RYA Chartplotter

Many Thanks Benbow and BIGNICK. When all is connected and switched on, a look in Device manager and Ports just shows COM1 and the Printer port. There is no sign of USB port. It is as if the laptop (P3 1 Ghz running XP Pro) is not "seeing" the USB/serial apapter. Don't know what to try now...

    UKHO/RYA Chartplotter

Have a laptop, a Garmin 48 and the above chartplotter. Laptop has no serial port (USB only). Got the correct Garmin lead and bought a Belkin serial to USB thingy. Spent 15 hours trying to get GPS to show up on chartplotter. Nothing! Read all the Help file suggestions. Nothing! HELP! <hr...

    Yacht Club Memberships.

Yacht Clubs, like any other clubs with a social function, will always reflect the enthusiasm, complacency or apathy of their members. Some do well when in a position to attract people to what they offer, be it on the water or social. Others fall out of favour due to complacency or lack of...

    DSC VHF attacks GPS!

Re: Tested? Yes indeed. A little (loud) 'naming and shaming' in a few mags might well make someone sit up! Now then N*sa Marine - where to start? Red to red and green to green, all is safety, go between!

    DSC VHF attacks GPS!

Re: Persevere with NASA Twister_Ken Yes, indeed. I am in the process of formulating my 'approach' to NASA based on the excellent responses that I have received from 'those as knows' on this and other boards. Red to red and green to green, all is safety, go between!

    DSC VHF attacks GPS!

Thanks to one and all for replying. Will list all the suggestions in the best logical order that I can and try them all. Sorry to say, NASA dismiss the whole idea that their new baby is the problem. Red to red and green to green, all is safety, go between!

    DSC VHF attacks GPS!

Yes, the problem is there whether NMEA is connected or not. Also, the set need only be on receive. As soon as you switch on the radio, the signal bars on the GPS just 'melt away!' Red to red and green to green, all is safety, go between!

    DSC VHF attacks GPS!

Re: Meridian GPS cgull Meridian is an excellent set in virtually all respects. Could use an external aerial connection though. It will (or should) interface with any DSC set. The 'portability' of DSC ident numbers is a problem. I don't think that are usable in the way that you intend. Red...

    DSC VHF attacks GPS!

I think that the problem may be that the GPS is a hand-held (with a 0.5 M NMEA interface lead to the DSC radio.) The radio is screening, or grossly interfering with the signals to the GPS. Is there a fix? In its usual operating position, the GPS works fine. Switch on the radio and the signal...

    Galileo GPS

What makes anyone in Europe believe that if the fertilizer confronts the air conditioning, that Uncle Sam will not push some button somewhere and zap Galileo. The NSA will not concede the airwaves when push comes to shove. 'Apple Pie' gets a war - Galileo gets a headache. As Guinness say at...
