I don't have much mechanical knowledge and I fitted one to my boat recently (while out of the water). My shaft just unbolted from my gearbox coupling and I drew it back and installed the PSS seal and re attached the shaft to the coupling. I didn't need to re align anything and it was reasonably...
Wow unlucky. Do you have a y piece with a water feed and a breather? I can only see one pipe coming from yours? What boat? I understood that on a boat with a speed of less than 12 knots you dont need a water feed.
Does it only leak when the shaft is rotating ?
Thanks. I'll give this a go. I thought you melted the solder from the iron not the joint. I'll try again with some lead solder and flux.
If I don't have any luck I see you can buy solderless pl259's, a brand called Shakespeare. Presumably there is a downside to these though.
I was trying to solder with the smaller pointy soldering iron tip, I will try the bigger flatter one. I don't think I've been getting the plug hot enough.
When I next replace the vhf cable I'm not going to bother with a join, will just run straight to radio.
Hi Chris we are at lochnell, was supposed to launch yesterday but when the yard went to put the mast on they found the new backstay is too short!
Hope you and Tracey are good, will see you soon no doubt
It's a battery one I'm using
Seems to get very hot -I burnt my fingers anyway
Am I aiming to get the pl259 very hot as well? I.e. rest the iron on it so it gets very got before applying the solder to the tip of the iron?
Thanks
Thanks. I have lead free solder that came with the soldering iron. I've watched quite a few you tube videos and they make it look easy. But when I do it I just burn loads of solder and it doesn't go where I want it to go.
Does anyone else have trouble soldering a pl259 for their vhf?
I cannot seem to get the solder to go into the end of the pl259 where the inner wire comes out. And I can't get it in the 4 small holes that are supposed to be filled with solder.
The solder just burns on the end of the soldering...
No I was looking for him when was there but he's off to Cornwall apparently.
Hopefully that is something he can do? If so I'll speak to him when next at yard.
Thanks
Yeah I'll make sure to rivet or whatever so it's done correctly
With the lazy jacks I'm not sure to be honest. It's just what we've always done. We use them for hoisting the sail and then dropping it. Then put sail ties on and then get the lazy jacks out of the way and we put the mainsail...
Thanks. Do I need to use a shackle at all or can the lazy jack just go straight through the lacing eye? Is chafe the issue?
Don't know if it makes a difference but our lazy jacks are the type that are just used to drop the sail and are then stowed away the rest of the time.
I actually read on...
