What has happened to the boat market?

There are so many boats 28 ft and smaller out there; but people nowadays are looking for boats 33ft and over that provide much more accommodation and comfort for a few more £thousands. Unfortunately, If you want to sell a smaller boat, you would need to drop the price.

Should I have her grit blasted, dried and epoxied?

You dont say the make of the boat so it is difficult to judge. In my opinion it is a lot of work and a lot of money for a boat of that age; just keep an eye on it as it is very unlikely to get worse and enjoy the sailing.

    Oil questions

To my knowledge, Kubota USA have no preference for as long as it meets the specifications of whatever oil you use. Ten, twenty, years ago, people were totally against synthetic oils, based on misconception; nowadays, especially the younger, choose to use synthetic oils. in terms of cost, both...

    Oil questions

We had numerous posts on this topic over the years explaining the superior properties of synthetic oils over the old fashioned mineral oils; (do a search). Engines are not designed for a particular oil type; oils specifications are "designed" for engine types. Actually, mineral oils nowadays...

    Oil questions

I have always used fully Synthetic oil for my old and newish engines as they are far superior to mineral oils in every way and at the same price. Make sure you use the correct specification for your engine and always Synthetic.

When does an 'old boat' become a 'classic yacht'?

It becomes "classic" when you have to start paying twice as much to keep it going for maintenance

EU fines the UK €32m for red diesel in Ireland

The agreement, and rightly so, is that N Ireland is part of the EU and all EU rules should be followed and that includes red the diesel issue. The UK government has been fooling around with the red diesel case and all issues regarding N Ireland in relation to the EU and now the taxpayers have to...

    Volos/Skiathos Floods

Things are not looking good, today and tomorrow, for the area around Volos, including North Evia and Attiki. We had a big storm last night and expecting more rain tomorrow. The already flooded areas may suffer more. The winds have been force 6 to force 8, but it is expected this time of the year.

    Nice little boat

Many many years ago, I had a wooden boat and I spent all my spare time looking after it. Nowadays, I look at wooden boats from a distance and I think they are beautiful when varnished and polished, but I will never have another wooden boat; give me a plastic fantastic boat anytime.

Ideal Med boat size? (Any hard size related costs)?

Sailing in Greece during summer time, June, July, August, the boat should have a big accessible cockpit and a big main cabin to make it easier with the hot temperatures. But, the same boat during the Etesian seasonal winds, sailing in the Aegean, may be less suitable in the open seas, bearing in...

    New forum

I have been using this Forum since the late 90's, I think 1998; changed the name a couple of times to match the name on my boats. Moderators are needed but they do get it wrong sometimes. For example, a couple of months ago, I decided to sell my boat and I posted a question here asking where is...

Berth in Athens mid June 3 nights - suggestions please.

Yes, it can be too busy nowadays. Born and grew up there, it used to be much more relaxed many years ago when I was a teenager racing in dinghies; I will be there from May onwards. Try the East side of Attica; there are a few small harbours that are not as busy as in the West Attica, but it is...

Berth in Athens mid June 3 nights - suggestions please.

Zea Marina (my home town) is always fully pre-booked by the regular users, very hard to get a place. The marinas in Faliro Bay (Flisvos, Alimos) should be able to find you a space but it will be a last minute job based on availability. Perhaps the best option is to find a marina or small harbour...
