bungee loop over winch barrel works well. current boat has wooden struts, which work well with the heavier lids. gas struts i am not so sure about - suspect they would rust like a rusty thing? but have not had them on a boat.

benefit of boarding amidships or just aft is in waves - boat moves the least there. still scary (watched that Pitcairn vid again!)
