    Peeing sitting down

Exactly. There is no man in the world whose aim is nearly as good as he thinks it is. Everyone sits for everything on Auspicious. I reserve the right to determine where you get off if you don't like it.

What do you do on a long Passage?

Read. Movies and podcasts and music on iPod. Light cleaning. Cooking and baking. Staring at the horizon. Counting my blessings.

    Your worst raftor ever

I shan't argue your point. Certainly rafting up at a pontoon is the exception rather than the rule in the US. That said, the worst rafting I have experienced was in Hamble where after a failed attempt on a proper approach a group of British sailors came downstream and downtide to crash into my...

What's your fave/most useful gadget for liveaboard?

pressure cooker, vacuum sealer, stick blender, good knives, good freezer, good fridge. 2 x Rocna anchors, one electric winch, chartplotter/radar. SSB/Pactor, Ubiquiti Bullet wifi bridge. Comfortable mattress and great aft cabin. The sea, the sky, the wind, and dolphins at the bow.

Change to US propane gas cylinders

My Hallberg-Rassy was delivered with two EU tanks that are 7 or 8 kg each. In my case two US-spec 10 pound tanks fit in the locker. Interestingly even though the outer consumer threads on the US tanks don't fit, the gas whip in my locker fits into the internal refill threads and I haven't had to...

Pactor or another make of tnc?

Attachments are a function of your shore-based service provider. Winlink and Sailmail both support attachments for gribs. Speed is an issue for connect time, power consumption, and the chances of your connection dropping. Oh - you're connecting to a shared resource so the longer you are...

    Which oilies for liveaboard?

I got the best offshore gear that Gill had at Southampton in 2005. At the time it was a lightweight sleeveless jumper (one-piece for torso and legs), bib trousers, and a heavy jacket. Really good gaskets and wrists and ankles and a good fleece collar. The hood folds into a pocket in the collar...

SSB - be honest, is it rubbish?

I have spent good time on both sides of the Atlantic and in the Caribbean on my own boat and on deliveries, with SSB, Iridium, or Globalstar and sometimes SSB and one or the other satellite system. SSB with Pactor e-mail is the way to go. period-dot. I've had watchstanders miss traffic because...

    Pactor modems

They work great. My experience, including side-by-side comparisons with Iridium and Globalstar, is that Pactor is the best thing going unless you can swing VSAT or one of the other high-bandwidth (relatively) commercial systems.

What do you think about on a night passage?

Whatever podcast is on my iPod. Not missing the next periodic sweep of the radar. Seeing "them" before they hit *me*. When I get off and can sleep.

    Atlantic crossing - routing question.

I did an East to West crossing in April - June 2006. Watch the forecast for the mid-Atlantic high and adjust accordingly. It was a great trip and I would do it again. You will want to watch the hurricane forecasts, but they don't exactly sneak up on you. I'd recommend some means for weather...

    for all the ssb/weather folks

As I understand it, small commercial fishers out of the US are very dependent on HF wfax. Regardless, there has been strong support for wfax since the public comment period. It is considered probably here that the opportunity for public comment was a well-prepared plan by the bureaucracy (career...
