We made it to Vlieland, West Terschelling, Ameland, Borkum, Nordeney and Helgoland this summer. But with 1.4m draft we sailed to the north of the islands!
Had my previous boat at Pin Mill and on occasions would return after a weekend away to find the dingy almost awash! Never saw the seal in the dinghy though.
The one everyone forgets is when a sailing boat is overtaking a power driven vessel.
I guess the other five are fishing, RAM, Not under command, constrained by draft ....... one more .... towing? Crossing a narrow channel? Got me there!
I have two euro accounts however many smaller Dutch shops require Maestro cards (which most of the world dropped years ago) so I still have a problem paying by card in Netherlands.
Perhaps the Race Officer should show some more consideration to other water users and set a course outside the main channel? The Colne is quite a wide river!
Norderney we struggled to get water as we were on the wall. Electricity was available. We shared a plug in with the Dutch boat outboard. It was one of the most expensive places to date and isn’t a patch on the Dutch facilities.
In Borkum we tried the suggested berth in Reeds. No water, no...
The marina is OK but the attitude of the HM unacceptable. No water on the quay unless they put out a standpipe and they only do that with reluctance and don’t tell anyone when! We left with empty water tanks having bought 2x5 litre bottles at the supermarket.
I am in Nes, Ameland as I write. No holding tank although we do carry a roll of toilet bags just in case. Never needed to show anyone we have it. No problem with fuel either.
Did have to show Covid vaccination certificate on arrival at Borkum in Germany last week. However my advice is avoid...
Athene is still in Netherlands. Had about 500 miles sailing over the last few weeks from base in Volendam to the Frisian islands and on to Germany and to Helgoland. This is her last season in Netherlands for a while. Have to return to UK next year before June.
Last season I used Amsterdam Marina a few times and booked a berth by phone or email each time to be sure of a space. Good marina on north side of canal. Free ferry to Central Station a 5 minute walk away. Takes away the hassle of moving!
