here is a report from our holliday in Croatia
this is the 10the year we stay here,
second with our Karnic

First two weeks we stay with our 4 kids and my daughters boyfriend, and another family with 3 kids in a house in Cavtat.

This is the view from our Balcony, we can see old town Dubrovnic at 5nm.
usually one or more big cruise ships in front

i-crWzNhR-L.jpg

and some yachts in the Cavtat bay (not in this pic)

This is Cavtat
i-QV8tQp2-L.jpg

mooring for just a few big yachts,
many celebs use this mooring place for the visits to Dubrovnic.

we spend our days with some cruising to another island or bay,
swimming shilling and water toys,
yes sometimes 12 peeps on the boat,
some stay on the beach or go shopping...

or visiting places like old town Dubrovnic
we managed to make friends with a local and use his mooring place in the old harbour, no hassle with the dingy.

i-Vnf7kGd-L.jpg

many big yachts anker in front of the old town

i-2jQQDVz-L.jpg

lunch was usually picnic on the boat.
or even a bbq every now and then

We alway's had our "evening / diner clothing" with us,
so the evening we went to a restaurant with the boat.

we had many of these, even grilled a few of them on the boat

i-R4vq4Wr-L.jpg

returning from the restaurant, cruising at night with the family on board, are memorable moments !

After 2 weeks the kids and our friends went back home
the following week I was alone with swmbo
we dit some very long trips,
one to Lastovo the most far ofshore island from Croatia

and one 2 day trip.
we stayed overnight in a nice bay called Kobas on the half island peljesac,
we had a very good fish meal, and one botle of Looza (for just the two of us)

i-bCb9B96-L.jpg

I showed swmbo all collors of my recently instaled LED lightning ;-)
I am sorry JFM no Lumishore, its Ikea ;-)
i-hPtD2b7-L.jpg

here swmbo enjoy's herself returning from Mljet, with some Croatian friends on the helm
i-kN9DpXc-L.jpg

the 4th and last week,
brother in law, and a friend with his wife came with us
we left Cavtat and then
4 day's live aboard (5 peeps)

the first leg I took the boat and swmbo the car, to Makarska area (around 80nm)

this picture took swmbo from the road,
the small boat in the middle with the long wake is me

i-Sq6N6qm-L.jpg

had to make a fuel stop in Gruz, the main Dubrovnic Harbour
on this picture you can see islands Daksa, Lopud, Kolocep, Sipan, Jakljan, and almost Olipa
and mljet, we visited them all.
i-QjKZsqM-L.jpg

I came along Korcula, didn't stop, visited last year
i-FgJvk9m-L.jpg

during this live aboard trip,
we were mainly around islands Hvar, Vis and Brac

this is our first night stop in a cove called zavala near Stari Grad
only one other boat around, memorable evenings with skinny dipping etc...

i-r7J6tSF-L.jpg

this is a lunch stop at Komiza on the island Vis

i-x5gDFCv-L.jpg

very nearby is the small island bisevo with the famous bleu cave
i-bfQHj4c-L.jpg

thanks to some advice from JamesTT on this forum, ;-) we discovered the "Green" Cave,
The Boat went completely inside, I could even make a 180° turn.
Both swmbo and myself are very impressed.
i-FRq9hm7-L.jpg

our last nightstop was in a very beautifull place, restaurant pipo near Povlja (Brac)

i-vTk275d-L.jpg

and then the lift out,
cleaning off 4 weeks fouling,
and trailer her back home, still 1650km to go.
i-SchK3x7-L.jpg

would like we'd made more and better boat and action pics, I am sorry, we were too busy enjoying ourselves

80 hours in 4 weeks,
140 hrs this season until now,
would like to add some more this year !!!

Fabulous report and pics Bart.:)

What a great place to go boating! No wonder the area is a popular destination.

You do tow a long way, but if you are getting 4 good weeks of boating, in that sort of environment, its worth it.

Boat looks great, and appears to be a suitable multi-purpose outfit. Good to see a decent size boarding platform.

Well done.

Wow. Fantastic report and pics. Looks a lovely place. Been talking to my wife and mentioned whether to look at marinas in Croatia for our S38 for a season or two.

OK, just make sure you are sitting down when you get the price quote from the marinas. I love sailing in croatia, but the marina prices are insane.

yes they are,
but the problem is to get a place in high season,

on the other hand,
In Croatia, there are so many bay's and coves on the islands,
where you can anker,
all free of charge

for a yearly mooring place, prices are affordable down south.
in smaller marina's they are even cheap,
just difficult to get a space

good idea,
just one advice,
go as far as possible down south,
Split or Dubrovnic area

for me this area is much nicer then Kornati , Zadar - Sibenic area
this area is more famous among boaters,

but down south is:
- beautifull big mountens with big forests on the islands
- less crowded
- many nice orriginal old villages, no tourist resorts.

Croatia is on my list of possibles for my next cruising area so I'm very interested in any info on marina prices. Are you talking about visitor fees or long term mooring fees? What would a 15m mooring cost on this coast, both short term and long term?

Great pics, Bart. What was the weather like during your 4 weeks? Did you find the marinas crowded?

Bart, thanks for a lovely post. Those are wonderful photos, and tell a story of you having a great holiday. Fantastic stuff!

I have only been to Dubrovnic once, a couple of years ago, in a chartered boat. It's a beautiful city and it was nice to see your pictures. I also covered some of the same places as you - Korcula, Brac, Hvar, Vis, etc. All beautiful

You picture of m/y A was stunning too. Top marks to her owners for not being sheep and following the superyacht circuit around Capri/July, Costa Smeralda/early August, Cote D'Azur late August. A was nowhere to be seen!

Deleted User, when I visited Split Marina there were lots of berths and it was quite a nice place. The marina I was at in Dubrovnic was very full. Apparently most marinas are full on Saturday because it's rental boat changeover day, so don't be fooled by the fact they look empty midweek.

mike,

here you can find some info on the croatian weather
http://prognoza.hr/sedam_e.php?id=sedam&param=Croatia&code=14454

this year we had extremely good weather
we have been able to go out with the boat almost every day (SS max 3)
temperature alway's 30 - 34

when you have Bora (nord wind) usually the weather is bad for 2 or 3 day's (very windy)
on average, every two weeks you can expect some windy weather.
but this year apart from 2 local thunder storms it was 4 weeks very good.

remember in the adriatic the weather can change very quickly, and very local
so we alway's look at the forecasts

ones we saw it raining and thunderstorm at 5nm, and we were sun bathing behind another island.

Thanks, Bart. I know about the thunderstorms and the Bora. I'm guessing that the summer weather may not be quite as predictable as the W Med

Thanks, jfm. Dubrovnik looks like the sort of place which would be crowded and expensive. I'm going on a motorbike tour with some mates in a couple of weeks time and we'll be riding the Croation coast and some offshore islands so I hope I can get a flavour of the boating facilities whilst I'm there

Dubrovnic is "expensive" compared to the smaller croatian villages and city's,
but is really cheap compared to popular places in SOF.

you have to find the small local restaurants outside Dubrovnic,
some of them are delicious and really cheap.

cost of living is cheaper then Belgium, so for shure cheaper then france.
maybe a little more expensive then Spain.

every year it is more crowded, but still a very nice athmosphere
Stradun in old town Dubrovnic is always very busy, but alway's very nice.

due to the distant location the very far end of the Croatian coats, there is no mass tourism

I am curious if you can make it with the bike till down under to Dubrovnic,
actually my brother in law and his friend did it this year (over 2000 km one way)
pls let us know if you made it that far ;)

Great post and fab pix.

I have been to loads of the places you mentioned, incl that restaurant you photographed.

As a matter of interest is the restaurant still open that is in the site of the old Nav School in old town Dubrovnic? Had most fab fish ever in there.
