Severe Gale 9 / Storm 10 forecast

Sitting in Brest

At least I'm round the corner at Moulin Blanc in Brest. A few here waiting for better weather to cross Biscay or go further South.

Looks as if I'll be here for quite some time if forecast is correct.

Boat is bouncing around a little so will swap to my heaviest lines tomorrow. Could be worse, only 2.10EUR/m/day incl. elect. & showers and free WiFi is pretty quick (just watched BBC news on iPlayer).

Gusts recorded at 127kmh = 69 kts here yesterday. We may have been at anchor but at least we had lights ... the nearby area of Sydney was blacked out.

(No, it isn't a Rocna :D ).

How annoying. Really hoping for a lovely evening sail on Friday, but likely to be impossible due to a massive swell battering the harbour walls. Stay safe everyone.

I have been keeping an eye on this all day as we were hoping to race the Victory this evening from Portsmouth. The wind has just veered from SE to SW, increased from 25 - 35 Kn and the glass is still falling, I think that we shall give it a miss. Let's hope that there is some improvement by Saturday!

Tally so far up the river... collected and returned to its home mooring buoy one no. errant cat that had made a break for freedom (spliced eye failed) and ended up on the mud, and restrained one flapping main that was in danger of destroying itself.

Two good deeds in one day so far. Feeling smug, but am sure it won't last :D:D:D

Yep, there was a big swell in Sydney Harbour again - an old Spanish surfie mate of mine, Juan Nacecada Minuto, sent me a link to some film of the surfies out around Bennelong, right by the Sydney Opera House.

Chrissie, won't Premier staff check it out and tie your dinghy down for you?

If they see it at the end of the pontoon, I dont have my phone to contact them, but if anyone is down checking their boats.... Im not used to being more than 15 mins away from my boat.

As the wind batters my windows I'm thinking of my boat bobbing on her mooring, I've often mentioned a decent webcam would be handy for times like this, but it would need night vision and the club locals don't give a hoot about people like me who just fund the place !

Funnily enough not many seem to care about their boats much either; maybe distance exacerbates worry...

All I can do now is remind myself I checked the whole mooring in the spring and replaced the swivel, if I went now I wouldn't be able to get aboard safely anyway, rather like I've read blue water sailors do in storms, I'll have to resign myself thinking I've done what I can so it's out of my hands !
