Non boaty question rebuilding a box trailer

We have a box trailer that is 25 years old, bearings, tyres and metalwork all good, ply floor and sides rotten. Lives outside. The first floor and sides lasted over 15 years. I replaced these with some ply that was £70 or so.. 1" thick. This hasn't lasted for 10. Obviously the best ply is...

    Easytide?

Is it just me? Opening Easytide I cannot access any info for ports in England and Wales. Ports is Scotland, Ireland and CI show up. Have I done something stupid?

    Petrol proof adhesives etc

Is there any adhesive, sealant or tape that can be relied upon to be petrol proof? OK so this is not for a boat but a car that has a split in a petrol tank breather expansion tank...a part that is no longer available.

    Underfloor heating

Now I know nothing but picked up on this on a VW camper website. I just wonder if it would take the edge off a chilly evening inside a boat? Having said that the floor area in a boat is not big... Underfloor Heating 12v VW-T25-T3-Vanagon-T2-Bus-Campervan-

    Painting an outboard

We have a 50hp Suzuki that lives outside on our boat which is in the water the whole time. The alloy leg is oxidising nicely wherever it has been touched by a spanner and the prop doesn't look that great due to occasional 'gardening'. I know it is probably the correct course of action but I...

    Pocket Gaffers

Pocket gaffers I'm looking for a small gaff boat, most likely in GRP. It needs to be not much longer than, say, 25ft overall including any bowsprit, transom hung rudder etc (marina fees). Waterline could be as short as 16ft. I'm after a keel boat with inboard diesel (1GM10 etc), draft around...

    Trim tabs and anodes

I have Bennet trim tabs that were probably installed sometime towards the end of the last century. I assume they are stainless. They are covered in layers of a/f. The boat has an outboard and there is no other metal under water. The tabs are not bonded to anything as far as I can see and yet...

Sliding outboard bracket for motor in well.

I'm pondering a sliding outboard bracket. The boat has a 4hp outboard in a well. I want to be able to raise the outboard so that it comes out of the water when the boat is moored. Raising the motor when sailing would be a bonus but I fear it will get in the way of tiller so have discounted...

    Dolphin direct drive engine

I find myself attracted to a small boat with a Dolphin engine. I remember a little about these from my youth but no detail. For those that don't know they are petrol, two stroke and direct drive. In order to go into reverse the engine must be stopped and started running in the opposite...

    Elco 50hp electric outboard

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of this motor? Seems to be the only 50hp electric outboard out there that I can find. Just wondering... EDIT, just found more, I obviously know nothing!

    Seastart

I'm thinking about signing up to Seastart for a small motor boat with a 50hp outboard in which, despite everything, I have no confidence. I've looked at their website and all looks good but I am keen to hear from people who have had to use their services. Anyone got any experiences good or bad?

    Eco-conscious boat cleaning products

Simple question My boat is afloat in the marina. By this time of year it is quite mouldy and green, particularly on the North facing bits. Over the years I have nipped into the supermarket and bought floor cleaner, cream cleaner, washing up liquid and anything that might take my fancy. They all...

Epoxy in cold weather (ie now in the UK)

I need to use some epoxy to glue in plugs over recessed screws and a couple of small patches of tissue over dodgy areas of my boat. I'd rather the patches of tissue did not go milky (is this called blooming?) How low can the temperature be? I have heard 10 degrees C mentioned...

    Storing petrol

What is the latest thinking on storing petrol? I have a three 5 litre cans which are more or less full of E10 and a 25 litre tank half full of a mix of E5 and E10. Will it be OK after 2-3 months? If only the car wasn't a diesel!

    Fresh or salt

There must be a simple way of testing whether the water in those hard to get to places is fresh or salt WITHOUT having to taste it? If so, please tell, I am not licking the bottom of my cockpit lockers...

    CT1 anyone?

I hear a lot about CT1's magic qualities, applications under water etc etc. Is it wonderful stuff? Is it a cheaper alternative to Sikaflex? When it goes off is it hard or is it a bit like silicone? Can you sand or paint it? I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has used it, particularly...

    More insurance increases

I wrote recently about a big hike in insurance premiums for our little motor boat...now I have the renewal in for our dinghy. Towergate have sent me a renewal that shows a jump from £18.50 to £38.13 including a customer service charge of £15. It would have been nice if they had explained why...

    Painting over varnish

I plan to paint the bottom of my varnished clinker dinghy this winter. Those of you with old leaky clinker dinghies will know why... I would normally approach this by rubbing down the existing varnish and making sure it is sound before applying undercoat, paint etc. Someone mentioned removing...

    Insurance renewals

Just wondering, has anyone else noticed a significant hike in their insurance renewals. Mine was £155 for the last two years, this year it jumps to £189. (No changes or claims made). Is this the new normal?

    Fuel vaporisation???

Out on the boat today, hot. The boat has a 50hp Suzuki outboard. After about 20 minutes at 3000 rpm the motor just died. No warning lights on the dial etc. A couple of goes and it restarted. All was well for the rest of the trip (apart from my nerves). Could this be down to fuel vaporisation on...
