Zenith carb on a 1953 GrayMarine Express

Oh dear- - - -what a pain. This is an engine I bought after many years in storage. The carb is an updraught one. It has trouble starting the engine after a lot of choke. . .then it dies after about 4 seconds. When is warmed up it is much the same, . . it will not tick over. . it runs for about 6 seconds then drops away almost to cutting out, but picks up and repeats the process.
I have changed the fuel pump, coil, condenser but to no avail. . still the same. I am not familiar with Zenith carbs. Is there a modern equivalent which I could fit ?
What is WRONG ?? HELP !!

Hi Erik,
Others have mentioned problems with the distributor on these engines, otherwise sounds lean.
A
