Sunday - went to Lymington to clean the boat. Finished the outside, and was now inside, when I heard 'heavy machine gun' fire against the boat.

Jumped out into the cockpit to see what had happened just as my son was saying 'Ooo-Err Dad, that's awful!'

The boat, from stem to stern, had been strafed in some 50 direct hits of large blobs of the most foul shredded green mixture. Just my boat. Not the one next to me, nor the pontoon, just my boat.

And the perpetrator was nowehere to be seen.

I reckon a flock of 'whatevers' had been looking for the cleanest boat in the marina, found mine, targetted her, made a dive bomb attack and beat a low level retreat to escape detection.

The question is, what flying animal - certainly didn't look like seagulls mess....

Notice on bulk head will do trick "I must not annoy other people in nearbye moorings."Obviously boat stood out like sore thumb from massed ranks of nice green coloured craft and somebody lobbed saucepan of last seasons pea soup to teach lesson. One clean boat makes all other look scruffy there bye entailing loads of work for lazy buggers like me.You have been warned.......

Radar!

Now you know what your radar is really for! I've heard of flying pigs but this is the first time there's been actual evidence of them.

Next time keep it on with your shotgun at the ready.

Green you say, anybody been reading Harry Potter lately and practising? Actually green grassy messes are normally associated with geese or swans!! Or flying yorkshiremen who've been at the mushy peas down at Harry Ramsdens, any around you?

Re: They got me too.

When I told my wife what had happened, she laughed and said it served me right for when I had laughed at her story last year.

She was in her Discovery with the roof open but the gauze screen drawn. A Heron took off from the river, 'blowing main ballast' as it flew over her car. On hitting the gauze screen, the 'bombs' were shredded and sieved, plastering her and the car with the most disgustoing smelly pooh!

Now she has her own back....

Ardea cinera

Sounds very like a Heron (Ardea cindera) to me. I know about this intimately. Many years ago, I saw one cover the entire width of a road one foggy day when I was about 17. There I was, motorcycling along when this thing takes off from one side of the road, opens its bomb doors and proceeds lay a 2" wide trail across the entire width of the road - the only gap in the trail across the road was where yours truly had ridden through too fast to stop, and had copped for it! At the time, I estimated that across the road and my nice leather bike jacket was about 1 to 1.5 pints of fish smelling green s***! .....and they tell me worse things happen at sea?
