You\'ve never had it so good...
Nowt to do with sailing, but given the moaning and gnashing of teeth there's been here lately about Inland Revenue, I felt I had to share this with you.
The Italian Treasury has sent 35,000 demands for unpaid car tax in 1999 to the town where I live in Italy (population: 200,000). Those who can prove they have paid have to get in a queue (mornings only) waving their proof of payment. From experience, I know it can take up to three hours. Those who can't... will have to pay up, plus interest and fine. In other words, despite admitting they've made a cock-up, the authorities state that the onus is on the citizen to fight his way back to 'clearing his name'. Can it be legal to demand you pay the same tax twice, even though the authorities should have a record of the payment? And don't forget, you can do nothing by post, nothing by telephone, and you have to hope you've queued at the right desk. United Europe? Ha ha
And you're complaining in the UK??!!!
P.S. Last month, the same happened with 50,000 'overdue' parking fines. Sigh!
