Over the years I've found in charity shops a lot of books written in the late 40s and 50s about boating exploits. I guess the war might have had an impact on peoples adventurousness. The travel during the war had probably expanded a lot of peoples horizons and the danger had probably made setting sail in a small boat seem reasonably safe in comparison.

And presumably there were a huge number more who didn't write a book about it. These days I wonder if there's a sailing couple who isn't vlogging their every move. It feels like the phrase should be changed to if a tree falls in a forest and a youtube video wasn't made about it did it really fall?

Once again though a 25ft boat is sufficient for a couple to cross oceans. How pampered we've become

Yes...

Also, buying a boat and sailing out of the UK was the only way to take money out of the country (legally) then. I'm sure that increased the numbers.
