Your Ultimate Med Cruise

exactly my thought Mike,
just "be" on the boat, thats all we need,
going out is a bonus,

by the way,
can you handle JW completely on your own ?
with help from the harbour staff when mooring I assume.

after 4weeks practice, we manage quite well, Elly and myself,
but all alone, not yet ready for that,
especially not in windy conditions as some area's in SOF suffer from.

O yes, and after 4weeks continiously on the boat, its hard to get at work :)

SWMBO and I can handle JW easily on our own - not sure who is actually in charge but it all works and looks quite slick.

Single handed

The Med seems to have a different view to the UK when berthing.
Its almost expected that you need help and a dockmaster often comes out to help even if they arent actilly called.
Seems to happen all over the Med - whereas in the UK you are usually left to get on with it.

So arriving at the berth single handed isnt generally a problem because there's often help.

Leaving requires a little thought - I use both my thrusters to keep the boat in position whilst I untie - the little radio remote is really useful - I hang it round my neck. Once untied and at the helm, handling the boat is just as usual.

Oh yes - there's the bits SWMBO usually does - once clear of the harbour you have to leave the helm to tidy up fenders etc

Actually when I went out on the anchor last week overnight on my own, the hardest bit was pulling up the anchor.
With SWMBO, we use a system of hand signals - she operates the winch from a curly wired remote in the chain locker whilst I drive the boat forward keeping the strain off the winch.
The 67 is too big to see over the bow so when I was on my own I had to go to the bow and gradually winch in a bit - then wait for the boat to stabilise - then winch a bit more ... etc. She always swings round when we winch in and the chain pops over the guide so we have to get it straight before winching more - if you know what I mean.

I have one of those curved (banana shaped) anchor swivels which works every time so once the anchor is off the bottom its easy.

heading to Isola Del Giglio
when you're in Campese bay, there is a buss driving up the hill, (every 20 min.) to the nice small village Giglio up there, really worth the effort my guests told me.

the other nearby island (to the South East) Giannutri
that bay on the south,
is also worth a visit,

then Tuscan mainland.
porto Ercole is VERY nice, but no space for passage boats, they send you to extremely expensive private moorings,

there might be space in the other Marina Cala Galera, but that one is not nice,

you might stay on anker in front of the beach near Cala Gelera,
and then just after 19h, go to Ercole, and moore in the center of the town,
on the "emergency quai"
moore on the left side of the qai ! not on the front, not on the right side.
I got a place there on reservation (officially not possible), but saw a few other boats coming in for chelter for the "bad weather outside"
PM when you need more info,

oh yes,
restaurant "Gambera Rosso", thats the one you want :)

enjoy! not doubt you will.

Thanks Bart. We're anchored in the bay round from Porto Giglio now, and will tender in for Dinner. Porto Ercole is defo on the list, maybe next stop. Weather still v settled, so we've only stayed in port once so far in a week away.

You lucky So and So's

Hi Guys,

Nick it sounds like you are having a Whale of a time down there :) I wonder if any of you have any nice pics of Monaco as seen from the Water etc? I have written a piece of Music called ' The Ballet of Grace ' and would love to post a couple on my Web site ( Obviously would mention copyrights of etc ). Please PM if you have :)

Many Thanks

Tara

I've uploaded some Monaco pics in our Blue Angel Rome Marseille delivery thread, post #99.
link to the thread is here above in post #3

you can use the pics on your site if you like one of them, but they are unfortunotly not high quality, no pro photographer among the crew nor guests :)

Have a look at http://www.jimbaerselman.f2s.com/balearics.htm , also the pages on Corsica and Sardinia, Sicily and Greece. They're a bit out of date, but good for planning itineraries.

I'm slowly tranferring and updating all this stuff to a much more elegant site, which at present only covers Biscay and the most popular Greek destinations. I'm adding about two pages a week, but you need to be logged in to see the stuff . . .

A lovely Site

Dear Jim,

It looks like you are putting a lot of effort in there, wonderful stuff :).

I am enjoying reading all these threads posted by many of you. There is something very special and endearing about the Med and those of you enjoying the Sun, Sea and beauty too. Admiration is a word that springs to mind.... mixed with a little envy lol :p .... Been raining a few days here, some Sun would be wonderful.

The posts here are very inspiring, your efforts enjoyed and very helpful in planning our dream trips :) hopefully inspiring many others too.

Thank you :)

Thank you ma'm.

I'm afraid not much more will be added to the site over the next three weeks. We're on the water in the Ionian, participating in a "dark side" activity, a sailing regatta.

Well, it's actually an excuse for a trip to a landlocked bay on Levkada, within which a horde of some 400 peeps will gather for a ginormous PU, afterwards scattering to the Greek winds to recover for a swims and sunbathes on suitable beaches. Me? I'll retire to Fiskardo, crowded but smart, to enjoy the hair of the dog at Cafe Tselente, and his eclectic selection of classy music.

It sounds like a lot of fun, I wish you a fantastic time. Participating in a ' Dark Side Activity 'a sailing regatta, that sound fantastic. That term reminds me of a title to a piece of music I wrote Friday afternoon called ' A Dawn Beyond Darkness ' quite a deep Ambient piece:

Have a lovely time Jim

Best wishes to you and all of you lucky enough to be Down there, send some Sun this way :)

Thank you ReneJK

Hi ReneJK,

Thank you so much for sharing your Thread and Cruise experience, some really lovely locations. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and some of those photographs are stunning. The first experience of the Sea is an important one for youngsters and it looks like your daughter had a lovely one.

I wish you well with further Cruises, the Best of Wishes to you.
