What, in your opinion, takes up less room in an anchor locker, rope or chain? I've a chance of a leccy windlass that would make my life easier but the gypsy only takes chain. Having limited space I'm wondering wether all the mods to fit it would be worthwhile.

Chain - it's heavy and it lies well. Don't know your locker dimensions but I wonder if warp would fit in a chain locker, even assuming you have a "lid"? Would be impossible with a chain pipe.

But if space is limited, is it a small boat? The weight distribution of having a pile of chain and a leccy windlass might be an inhibiting factor.

Re: you\'re wrong!

Hmm....you been looking, how'da know I've got a small one! The anchor locker takes an anchor warp of 50mtrs with the anchor and 3mtrs of chain. Theres room to spare. I've thought about the weight issue. Not sure it will affect the handling to much. I might load up the locker with something heavy and see it sheltered conditions. What would 50mtrs of chain weigh.

Brendan! What would 50mtrs of chain weigh?

Don't know, but it will be pd heavy. Somebody clever like Brendan should be able to work out 50m of 8mm.

Plastic chain. I know'st not of such wonders.
But prithee, I do detect that it may undo the catenary effect.

Ah now, I'm glad you said that because the scope needed for chain is less than for warp. So it opens up whole new fishing grounds for me! A bit further afield out into ther channel.

You've beaten me to it .. not difficult. Scope for chain is no less than 3:1, whereas scope for warp is no less than 5:1. So, you'll need 2/3rds more length of warp than chain. Chain is the right answer, even if it does take up a little more space.

Regards, Jeff.

If you're planning to anchor mid channel in say 50m depth, i do'nt think you'd actually need 150m of chain, I'd reckon that 50m chain + 100m of warp would probably be OK, what kind of anchor is it?

I used to have a Fishermans type. seemed to have been around for a long time so obviously prooven. Bit of a pig when it comes to storage so I changed it for a folding anchor. Seems ok, four flukes fold against the main part of the anchor with a collar to hold them in either the closed or open position. Nice and light to compared to the old fisherman pattern. Stores really easily as well.
