The engine on my new boat runs great - but the control panel lights and alarm weren't working. It's a 1GM so all pretty simple electrics... I took a look at the control panel harness... It was coated in insulation tape, but once removed you could see half the wires had shorted after the insulation melted, and the alternator exciter wire (which joins to the alarm/lights wires) was on the always-on (wrong) side of the key switch.
Looks like someone took it apart once, put it together wrong, melted half the harness then played with it until it half worked.
Still, all fixed now. I think I'm going to rewire the boat.
