You know you\'ve got an old boat when..

Had a sudden rush of blood to the head & decided to completely strip and service the main Genny winches. Looked up the Lewmar website and they didn't have manuals for pre-1992 winches, so I e-mailed them. They asked for digital photos, which I duly sent.

Very prompt reply saying that they didn't have diagrams for my winches, but the chappie had managed to find one of them in their museum. He dissembled it and explained the procedure to me by e-mail.

They're 33 years old and still working perfectly (the winches that is - I don't know about the chaps at Lewmar) - full marks to Lewmar for the quality of their product and service.

An Old Boat Is When....

An old boat is when.....

During this year´s work I hit some bits of the hull with a hammer and they came off.
Got a welder to put in some new steel. Just as good as when it was new.

An old boat is when...

The front cover of the engine manual carries a Royal Warrant.
"By Appointment to King George the Fifth"!

1. She's worth about 10x what she cost new,

2. The latest expensive 'must have' from the Swindleries would look naff and out of place.

3. The 'perfect bit' comes out of the swindleries bargain box for pennies.

... something you remember buying at the boat show has turned to a heap of rust and/or mould.

... none of the fenders match, except in colour (matt grey).

... damaging the chart plotter interface means that you have to sharpen the pencil again.

The Baby Blake, described by the previous owners as "the new one", turns out to have been made in 1956, the compass has a hand painted card saying "Searby and Sons, Lowestoft", the Volvo was "supplied by the Bolinders Company", the windlass was made by Reids of Paisley and the writing on the CQR reads "Patent applied for"!

They all work perfectly well...

I asked for help with my Gibbs and was told they went out of production 30 years ago and one of you lot told me with satissfaction he had got the last of the spares - luckily they are still ok as I would have real problems getting spares in tallinn where we and the boat now are - its a hard life etc.

.... You phone up to arrange insurance, having recently acquired her, and you get laughed at. Alot.

.... People tell you approvingly how good British timber was.. between the wars!

.... You still have a DF receiver on the wheelhouse roof.
