Raggy looking for help here please - I bought a plastimo dingy with a wood floor and an inflatable keel. Stuck a 5 hp Honda four stroke on the back.

A quick test drive was fun, seemed to start and run OK, so off we all went towing the beast down the harbour.

Now then, in messing about between the beach and the boat a mighty fun thing happened, all of a sudden everything went smooth and fast, like really fast, I guess that it went up on the plane?

It seems to take about 20 yards and off it will go but not always, do I adjust the angle of the leg or what?

yep, you went up on the plane. One of you sat forward, and moving people about in this way is how to trim an inflatable, not much to do with fooling about with leg trim. Weight is crucial, so it will whack along provided maximum probaly two on board.

Now i recovered a dinghy in the marina over a week ago, it was floating in the middle of the marina upside down, there was no-one arround to ask who's it was so i tied it up at the end of my finger. The following day i told the marina manager that i'd found it and tied it up should he hear of anyone that had lost it. I then jokingly said that if no-one claimed it in a fortnight i would presume that it was finders keepers, he said NO it would then become the property of the marina.
Is this right? after all, it was an upturned boat that i salvaged...!!!

Cheers...

Alistair...

p.s sorry to butt in on your post, ian.

Take it to your local (to Marina) police station lost and found and leave your details.
They decide when it is 'lost lost' and will contact you to go and remove it at which time I believe you actually have title to the goods.
Having drawn the Marina's attention to it you should tell them where it is now, but they would not be able to claim it as theirs!

The terms & conditions for berthholders etc will very likely have a clause regarding this very matter or something similar that any unclaimed boats fenders dingies etc will become the property of ----- Marina if no claim received within 6 months or thereabouts. So basically your stuffed. ........... Good Luck

Bollox. Even marina's cant rewrite common law. Take it to the police station like the man said. Then hope no one claims it.

Now I might be wrong but I think its a 99% certaintity that the original owner is going to realise that his tender is missing.

Don't think I'd be impressed if someone had taken it down to the local police station.

I kind of thought the same as you, Dave. it is a small marina.

I'm not wanting to fight for it as i bought a new zodiac in april, but it would be useful to my mate, so if it does end up in my hands i shall pass it on too him.

That is not common law it`s the law regarding property acts .If you do not claim an umbrella from a railway station etc within 6 months they can dispose of same as they wish. Big Big notice on door of lost property office at Victoria Station on public display.

Yes get the weight forward. If you happen to be alone and wish to achieve the same you can buy from somewhere, not from me, a tiller extension. This allows you to keep a sort of rudimentary control over the leaping careering butt bruising beast you have suddenly discovered, all the while looking both ahead and astern and trying to hang on all at the same time.

Nah, fit a bigger engine and a proper wheel/throttle arrangement. Just put one on our 270 Airdeck with an 8hp Yamaha 2 stroke - what a hoot!

Yep. But thats cos it is in there lost property office. Of course keep it for a few weeks, untill some one claims it. But then take it to the police to stop the gready marina getting there mits on it.

....and how much over the manufacturers recomendation is that?

Actually being ever so slightly serious, floor stability can become a problem. I know people who over-engined diving club inflatables and the fitted stainless strengtheners along the floor to add stiffness. With the convenience of an airdeck I think must come some sacrifice on stiffness especially at speed. Be careful you don't just enter a super-wobble and do a Malcolm Campbell.

I had a 15 on a Maestral 15 once and the only thing I can say about it was coming from the Southampton Boat Show to the slipway up the Itchen I tried, and failed, to display sufficient nerve to open it right up. Even little inflatables just on the plane give a wonderful sensation of speed.

The 8 weighs 27 Kg - teh boat is rated for max 10hp/40Kg, so we're well inside that...

There seemed to be plenty of ragless boats drifting around East Head on the weekend - seemed to be related to the weight saving/planing device whereby mobos are equiped with a fishing weight and string for an anchor.

Hm. But they put ratings on to cover themselves for US market. They can't do valid stress tests on things that are glued up, without leaving a huge saftey margin. I tried a 15hp on a 10hp rated boat, went like a rocket, no sign of any transom etc damage and all ok provided v careful with not leaping off waves.

Oh dear, i fear that that despite my record of v sensible ideas and thoughts to date, perhaps you will now begin to think am slightly not as sensible, and possibly even a bit of a mad tw@t.
