I've dabbled with making yogurt onboard for ages but it's always been a bit hit and miss. So in lakeland a while ago splashed out on an Easiyo maker, which is fine but the costs of those little packets of can lead a cruiser to tears! :)
So recently tried toying with powdered milk which again wasn't too great a success. Then the other day,.... 1L of semi skinned long life milk from morrisons and a couple of table spoons of live yogurt, into the easiyo with boiling water and wrapped in a towel - 10 hours later 1L of lovely fresh yogurt nicely set. Some aldi long life at 49P a litre waiting for the next batch. At last, cracked it!
Thought I'd share the joy :)

So onto bean sprouts next? Any top tips?

With the admiral's advice we hit on your final method some years ago on an Atlantic circuit: good gear to have on long passages. I don't see any point in buying proprietory bases: just find a live yoghurt you like and use that. Our best culture came from a little restaurant up in the hills in the Cape Verde islands and was recycled for months. Being in Greece now, we just buy the stuff.

From time to time the admiral has also had mesh bags of (mung?) beans dangling in the galley. Apparently if you moisten them every so often they just kind of grow. Of course the shop-bought stuff also grows its own packaging. Now that's clever.

P.S. Yes, Mung beans. Soy beans also work, I'm reliably informed. I've seen them grown commercially in shipping containers: they just chuck water at 'em every so often and keep 'em in the dark, like voters.

SWMBO swears by Easy-Yo. Cheapest place is, oddly, Hobby Craft. They probably don't have those in Greece, though...
