Hi, Am new to all this and just had maiden motor down river aboard my recent purchase. I had left the toggle thing connected to the pull out ignition leaving the ignition on on my old white 9.9 hp yamaha electric start outboard for two hours. Pressed starter button and engine woiuld not turn over. Could this be because I had left the toggle holding the ignition button out for 2 hours in the on position? If I had left car ignition on for two hours I would have expected a flat batttery but does the same hting happen with an outboard with no ignition lights?

I don't know for sure but.........I'm guessing something else! Correct me if I'm wrong but won't your engine run with manual starting and NO battery? If so it has coils energised by the coils in the magneto, and the battery is charged by charging coils and is only used to spin up the electric starter.

On my Yammie, and I doubt yours is much different apart from being smaller (mine is a 20 hp) it manual starts, and has a 12 volt charging output to charge a battery. The max output is only 8 amps so won't actually do very much to a flattish battery that probably needs a proper mains charger to charge it. If I want an electric starter I can fit one, with a loom that connects to the battery and to the key switch. This however only operates the solenoid on the starter, there is no ignition as such to it although on some set-ups the key switch is in parallel with the kill switch and will stop the engine.

Was this a battery supplied with the boat? If so I'd get it tested as it's either flat or duff in my opinion. These people supplied all my batteries, they are very cheap and very good, their own brand are re-labelled Exide batteries.

Thanks for the advice. I'll get the batteries. Yes mine has manual start too. Brilliant starter and I got going with one pull of the cord! Getting back to the toggle thing I had holding out the ignition button...I had the toggle in the on position all time engine was not running. Would this have drained the battery in a couple of hours sufficient enough to not turn the engine over on the push starter?
