Just read this month's YM and amazed to see repeated references to scrubbing teak decks. Presumably IPC have shares in companies replacing teak decks.

The "teak" we get nowadays on yachts (even expensive ones) is much softer and more easily damaged than the "real teak" that used to be available. I scrounged a large chunk of 100-year old 2 inch thick teak chemistry bench a few years ago, and despite 100 years of chemical spills, about a millimeter under the surface was pristine straight-grained golden teak, that was as hard as iron and would barely float.

I think you may be right. I was told by an only slightly smug owner of a 20yr old HR that his deck was superior to mine since it was from forest teak, not plantation like mine from 2000.

I was given to understand through all the various articles in PBO that teak should be washed with soapy water and a sponge across the grain - only in extremis should even a soft brush be used. Perhaps YM assume their customers are more upmarket and can afford more frequent replacement...?

Rob.
