re: Gasp reflex

I HAVE done some reading on gasp reflex. It's mostly associated with kayakers. Typical temperatures mentioned are around 40°F which is 4°C which is water you'll not likely find while sailing. And all accidents with the gasp reflex (kayakers, sailors seem to rarely if ever have it) were with people not sufficiently dressed.

And the point most kayakers make is this: it takes energy to free yourself from the inverted kayak, something you don't have to spare insufficiently clothed in very cold water. So dress warm - something all sailors I've ever met do anyway - and wear a LJ because it will not take energy to stay above water in one. The initial shock causing the gasping will be much smaller when well dressed. Then the LJ will have your head above water when the shock effects set in.

So - sorry I dismissed the gasp reflex, I know it exists - but when it comes to sailors and motorboaters, it's not very likely when properly dressed and a LJ donned you'll ever suffer from it.

But it does seem a good way to sell special protective clothing to scared people. As proven by the link provided...
