I found a few handy tips in this article, but the author does seem to have a liking for baking powder and sodium bicarbonate!

A few things that concern me:

  • Using petroleum jelly to mask through-hull fittings before antifouling. Why mask them?
  • Using petroleum jelly to lubricate hoses when fitting.
  • Using surgical spirit to dry a sail before applying a patch. Surgical spirit often has castor oil in it.

They are extracted from a new book published by Adlard Coles: Fast Fixes for Your Boat: 1001 top boat maintenance tips
