All right folks, following the appreciation of my other thread with similar subject, I'm posting a few pics of another very nice villa and its gardens.
Neither on the lake nor on the sea I'm afraid - the place is in fact in the center of Varese, a town a dozen of miles W of Como, as the crow flies.
But extremely elegant and timeless anyway, imho.
And on top of that, there's something else which makes the place well worth visiting: the villa used to be owned by a collector of modern art, and since he left it to the National Trust, it became a permanent exhibition of his beautiful collection.
Besides, in these days (and up to October), there's a special exhibition of works from Robert Irwin and James Turrell, offering an absolutely amazing experience on perception and materiality of light.
Which is made even more impressive by the location, inside an 18th century building. More details here: http://www.visitfai.it/dimore/villapanza/?lang=eng

Sorry Mr.Saatchi, I know you will say I'm biased, but with all due respect I'd rather visit again THIS exhibition any day of the week, than waste my time in looking at anyone's pants... :ambivalence:

Another stunning place, M! That exhibition sound interesting.
Yep K, you bet! Even more so, I would think, considering your job and your interests.
Btw, since you also mentioned in the other thread that you always wanted to see the lakes, why not take the opportunity to come this summer, while the exhibition lasts?
You're more than welcome to stay in my place in Lake Como, if you wish.
Aside from being a great base for visiting the lake surroundings, it's also not far from Varese, where the "Aisthesis" exhibition is.
I'll pm you more details... :)

We are currently staying on the shores of Lake Iseo after a few days at Lake Garda and in Venice and have fallen totally in love with the area.

Our drive tomorrow will take us up the East side of Lake Como as we slowly wend our way home via the Rhine Valley

Lake Como and Lake Maggiore are being saved for exploration on our next visit.

My one regret is that we didn't discover the area sooner

May

Glad to hear that you had a good time.
Actually, if you appreciated Garda and Iseo, you could only love even more Como and Maggiore (imho), whenever you'll have a chance to come back.
Drop me a pm by that time, if I'll be around we could have a drink together.
But not tomorrow I'm afraid, 'cause I'll be on my way to the sea...

Btw, since you mention the East side of Lake Como, will you be driving up to Splügen Pass?
Lovely mountain road indeed, with a great scenario, but so sloooow... And very narrow, in places. Take care!

And if you have time for a coffee along the way, Varenna is the nicest village on the E coast.
Or even better, you might try this place for a bite:

Njoy your trip!

That's a very generous offer, PM responded. Unfortunately we have a six week cruise planned around gulf of finland so may not be able to make it in the summer. Autumn is a different matter of course. :)

Aston villa is also nice but niether floats

I saw quite a nice house by the coast called Aston Villa and it was painted in claret and blue. I couldn't stay in a house with that name and colours though!

Red and white stripes, now that is another matter.
