Every boat owners worst nightmare!

Thoughts are with you. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Yesterday and today. Don\'t look if you are easily distressed

I hope she isn't too badly damaged.....i reckon she will be though! sorry. Thats exactly why i leave mine in during the winter, really don't trust props with long keel.

Can't bear to look....

Re: Yesterday and today. Don\'t look if you are easily distressed

Added on the 'To Do' list... must build cradle... keep meaning to do it every year, can't sleep when it's windy knowing 13 tons is propped up with chunks of wood.

Re: Yesterday and today. Don\'t look if you are easily distressed

Quite bad. Hull holed in two places. Mast bent, mast support totalled and coach roof needs a major re build. I'm waiting the the assessor to arrive but all ferry and airports are closed until, at the very least, tomorrow.
I have friends here with cranes, new cradles etc. but we mustn't touch her until the guy arrives. Sleeping aboard a Dutch boat until further notice. The various estimates by the locals of the total claim (One of my shrouds cut like a cheese wire through the stern of a ten meter MoBo) are around thirty to fifty K /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

A very sad sight and I hope you will soon be afloat again without any financial loss.

Looks like the cradle was too small for a boat that size. [Legs almost vertical and the pads below the turn of the bilge] If it belongs to the boatyard they will presumably be liable for the damage caused.

Just looked out of the windows of my hosts boat and a TV company is filming Wego!

Re: Yesterday and today. Don\'t look if you are easily distressed

I'm sorry to see this, but its hardly surprising - the boat fully rigged with all the sails on and only 4 jacks to support it at less than the full beam width.

70 knot + gusts are expected where I live and no one leaves a boat ashore with the mast in.

Hope you have a sympathetic insurer.

Re: Yesterday and today. Don\'t look if you are easily distressed

Very sad.
Take lots of pictures of everything before anyone arrives. And no one rearranged any of the boat props after they were set by the boatyard(take more photos of where the pads were on the hull and to show that noone disturbed them for cleaning, antifouling etc.
Good luck

Nightmare.

I get the feeling from your poss that you may have been aboard at the time. Is that correct. If so, i hope you were wearing strong underwear.

Good luck with getting it sorted.

Awful! I hope that when eventually you have it all sorted out you can look back and have a quiet laugh at the irony of those fenders laid out on your port side /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Re: Yesterday and today. Don\'t look if you are easily distressed

Very sad

But why is the mast up and all sails on. It is a dead certainty that two skinny props cannot support that windage. Surely its just a questin of when it will get the gust.

Re: Yesterday and today. Don\'t look if you are easily distressed

I know you won't feel this way right now, but the bottom line is that if you and any crew are OK, then over time the rest can get fixed.

I was surprised how it got to me - I guess this sort of incident is in the back of all our minds together with the uncharted reef or wreck and a few other nightmare scenarios.

Good luck with sorting it all out and keep us all updated with your progress.

Re: Yesterday and today. Don\'t look if you are easily distressed

We are insured with the German company Mannheimer.
The event took place at eleven thirty last night. At nine thirty today my SWHMBO phoned the insurance agent who wasn't very helpful. She then demanded the number for the main company. At midday I received a call from their assessor on mainland Spain who said that as all air ports and ferry ports where closed (Due to the weather) he couldn't get there at once so if I would take many photos I could go ahead and order the port authority to get the boat upright and secure (He knows that I am a liveaboard) and we can sort out the details when he arrives tomorrow or Monday. I sent the photos via email with my resume of the phone call and asked if that was as we had said it.
"Yes" was his reply.
Because I have special friends here (See "Ferry aground in Melilla") The work begins tomorrow. El presidente has personally visited today to give his best wishes. I begin to feel like royalty!
I will report on this as events unfold but it looks like one 'ell of an insurance company.
