I am planning a passage from E Med through Suez. Many moons ago there was an article on carrying weapons aboard in YM. Does anybody have up to date info on procedures, customs and legals for keeping weapons on board in international waters. Tried IMO/IMB etc nothing useful.

Yo Zulu, welcome to the nut-house. You will find some sensible answers on here, as well as those that are better suited to a looney tunes animation.

Just asking, why do you want to carry a gun?

a) are you prepared to kill some one (no point in carrying a lethal weapon if you're not)?
b) are you prepared to miss, and be killed yourself?
c) and in these terrorist-influenced times, are you prepared to be locked-up in some middle-east jail, while the toss is argued about whether you were smuggling weapons into a country?

Unless you are well trained in the use of firearms, prepared to kill, and willing to take the risk that the approaching boat is really a pirate, and not a refugee, and prepared for the real problems when entering any other country, it is not worth carrying firearms.

All you are guaranteeing is that you and everyone else onboard your craft will be killed.

There was a very long thread about this subject a few months ago. Got a bit paranoid towards the end. I came to the conclusion that I'd feel safer with the pirates than with some of the posters. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Many thanks for the pointer on the thread.
I'm contemplating Yemen and North coast of Indian Ocean. I certainly intend to carry weapons (preference for assault rifles). I could do with some help on how to clear them into UK on return.
Seems to be a lot of 'surrender victims' in the traffic. I have 2 kids under 12 with me. Not in a hurry to put my hands up to anybody.

As it is illegal to possess them here, the only practicable way to clear inward into the UK would be to toss them over the side outside the 12 mile limit. Look here for an explanation.

Just read it through. I think I agree, bring on the pirates.
