YBW and Spyware

Why is it that YBW.com uses spyware to monitor us?

Every time I log off the site I have to run Adaware to get rid of it. I understand that you need to have the site sponsored (Volvo etc) but not the need to run spyware.

Let us know please.

We've been over this ground several times before on the forums but I am more than happy to oblige again.

We don't run 'spyware' from ybw. Some of the banners that are served on various of our sites come from agencies that are very common across the web and your software may be picking up on their methods of serving banners. But on all ybw sites (and on the magazines with which they are associated) we adhere strictly to the Data Protection Act.

As per our terms the only information we automatically capture from you, other than that which you volunteer, is the type of browser and operating system you are using, plus your IP address. The first two are solely used to help us to ensure that we are producing sites that are compliant with our users' systems, not a particularly easy task as it happens; the latter is a security measure in case you abuse the facilities here and we need to track you down (it is otherwise ignored). These items of data are captured by any web server, so whether you realise it or not you are leaving an info trail whever you roam on the web; you do however have a guarantee that we'll respect that info when you log on here. That may or may not be the case elsewhere, especially on sites hosted in other countries.

As you know the e-mail addresses captured for registration on the forums are not freely distributed or displayed to the public and the cookie we employ is used solely to provide the log-in and personalisation functionality of the forums. Spam mail does not originate from our forum lists. We do not know what is secreted in the darker corners of anyones' computers and we have no ongoing wish to find out, I promise!

If I had my way I would take all this Spyware siht and dump in mid-channel. People don't understand what it is telling them and gain totally the wrong impression.

From my perspective as a new user, the team is working extremely hard to ensure the integrety of this site. I personally use a zone alarm (free) which does inhibit the odd intercept. I have no axe to grind - but as sites go - this is not bad!
