In YM's words, "We’ve compiled 10 great pubs [from London to Cornwall they say] where you can enjoy an excellent waterside view, as well as some quality food and drink"

Master Builder at #4 was somewhat of a surprise to me and the George in Yarmouth at #7! Some of the pubs aren't even between London and Cornwall (short route)! How did they do outside the Solent?

There are only 3 on that list that I've been to.
The Jolly Sailor
The Master Builder
The George
Excellent waterside views 'maybe' but I will not eat in any of those 3.
I wouldn't rate the views any better than a lot of others though. So I do wonder who drew up that list and what the remit was.

Superb lunch at The New Inn, at Shalfleet last week. Very nice half-mile walk from the nearest quay, though I expect eager duck-punters could get up the creek to within 200 yards.

Used to visit the Anchor Bleu at Bosham often, it is rather excellent, especially at high tide. You need boots when it floods though.

Since when has one been able to get a "waterside" view from the Bankes Arms at Studland. It's up the top of a bloody hill unless they have moved it down onto the beach since I was last there!!!

No mention of The Old Fort at Seaview though!

Ah, the Old Fort...that brings back memories.

I genuinely believed for about 5 years of childhood, that the name was The Old Fork. Glad it's still in business, nowhere in the UK is better positioned, considering it faces NE.

And the Steam Packet in Totnes, is this really a waterside inn when for more than half the time there's no water there at all? We've been moored in the Dart for years and never been there, maybe we're missing out.

I would have thought that one object of such a list would be places accessible from afloat. Neither the White Swan nor the White Cross have any moorings anywhere near, so access is by road or dinghy.

In fairness, the article is titled '10 great waterside pubs'. Not the best 10 and criteria for selection are not present. Sounds very much like a space filler funded by the pubs mentioned. If I were a pub owner, I'd feel v uncomfortable being on the same list as the Master Builder. I have never heard anyone say a good word about it.

And to add I had nothing to do with it or knew about the article.

I am in soft furnishings as some of the editors used to say....

+1
The Master Builder comes in at #4 with the glowing recommendation "As well as enjoying a great selection of ales, you can soak up the sunshine in the hotel's garden bar, which plays host to a fantastic BBQ in the summer."

I don't the the Master Builder is great; I think it's a rubbish rip-off ...and so do most sailors I think.

The trouble with this list is it is so misleading (at least to the forumites who know these places) that it demeans every other article in the magazine.
The whole magazine ends up devalued as a consequence. If the article instead had canvassed 'readers' best ten waterside pubs it would be different.
Would you be 'more' or 'less' likely to buy the magazine as a result of this article?
Less would be my response.
