My boat has a YAZAKI YA 30 fish finder fitted with a through-hull transducer, the hull is balsa core. The unit does not have a NMEA output and cant easily be seen from the helm and I want a display in the cockpit. Does anyone know if the transducer will work with another display eg NASA or RAYMARINE, I have read that fishfinders use a different frequency.

G'day Martin,

You should be able to fit the transducer without cutting through your hull.
Just cut the inner layer of glass and remove the balsa around the hole for 25 mm. then fill the void with epoxy resin mixed with Micro-fibres, leaving the centre of the hole clear for the transducer.

You can then install the transducer without any hole and no risk of water getting into the core.

Check to see the area below the water has Balsa, most Balsa cored hulls do not extend the Balsa below the water line.

I would not use neat epoxy to stick the transducer to the inside of the hull. I needed to remove an old transducer and on removing it a patch about 10mm thick was also removed from the hull which needed structural repair to fix. I would be inclined to use a weaker adhesive - perhaps epoxy overthickened with micro ballons to create a weak bond or some other weak adhesive.

Micro Balloons may cause problems as they contain air so the signal would suffer, almost any compound that does not contain air should be fine, Blue tack, Sikaflex, Bostic, and the list goes on and on.

Thanks for the responses, firstly there is already a transducer fitted which works ok with the fisfinder, it is glassed into the hull and goes right through. The transducer is black plastic and there are no markings on it - just a co-ax cable coming out. What I need to know is will it work with a digital display or do fishfinders use different transducers.

To try to answer your question, depth transducers work at a particular frequency. Different manufacturers can use different frequency transducers, so one make of display might, or might not, work with another make's transducer. Ideally, you need to find out what frequency your Yazaki works on - however this might be tricky as there doesn't seem to be any info readily available on the internet. So, another possibility would be for you to simply wire it into another depth display and see whether or not it works.
