We are going up to Yarmouth IOW on Saturday night for a special birthday meal, any recommendations for a good place to eat, preferably somewhere I can book in advance. Doesn't have to be posh or fancy, just comfortable and pleasant atmosphere, a nice pub would do. Have eaten in Kings Head before, enjoyed that, but not sure whether this can be booked in advance. Thanks.

Tried a new place in Yarmouth a couple of weeks ago. Called "On the Rocks" across the road from the Wheatsheaf. A bit of a gimmick in that they give you these little table top barbeques and you have to cook your own dinner on them. Limitted menu and the cooking method is not really suitable for fish IMHO. But the finest quality beef I have tasted for a very long time. About £90 for four with a bottle of wine.

Sian-Elins, next to the Ferry. Book a table on the terrace (weather permitting) and watch everybody c*cking up their mooring as the sun goes down. If you're worried about the climate - and who wouldn't be - ask them if they can guarantee you a table inside if the weather turns grotty.

Nice food and (imho) a nice atmosphere. Salty's, next door, is also good.

Wheatsheaf is fine and a favourite of ours for lunch, but not really for a special occasion?

Has the Bugle improved? Last time I went there (about 3 years ago) it was AWFUL and vowed never to go back. Is it time for another visit?

Thanks for all your responses. We went to Sian Elins which was lovely. Sat on the terrace and watched the sun go down, had lovely fish, went down well with all, especially the birthday boy. Was expensive, but for a special occasion that was fine. Was a good atmosphere in yarmouth harbour as well, everyone enjoying themselves. Nice evening.

No, the Bugle hasn't improved. If anything it's worse. 4 hungry lads and none of us could face a full plate of their greasy chips and stringy steak. The beer was so poorly kept that we left that also

In fairness, we did receive a refund for one of the meals but saw many other unhappy customers taking their meals back

Another vote for 'On the Rocks'. It works very well, simple salad, chips and a superb bit of meat that you cook on your own rock to your liking. Wonderful.
